Bollywood songs that celebrate the spirit of 'Karwa Chauth'

Beyond the elaborate arrangements and confusing rules, the ‘Karwa Chauth’ ritual is just a celebration of love. This year, the festival falls on Thursday October 13. Celebrated on the fourth day after the full moon (Purnima), this festival is observed by married Hindu women in North India. They go to great lengths on this day, by observing a long fast ( for their husband’s long life and prosperity). The wives break their fast with a glass of water offered by the husband and end the ritual by touching the feet of their hubby.
Many Bollywood songs also feature the Karwa Chauth ritual. Here are three of the most famous examples :
‘Ghar Aaja Pardesi’ (‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’)
“O Chaand Ko Dekhoon, Haath Mein Jodoon, Karvachauth Ka Vrat Mein Todoon’
‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995) was a watershed movie in the history of Bollywood for various reasons. Besides redefining romance for a whole generation of desi kids (and giving us unrealistic expectations for men) and giving Bollywood buffs a whole new ‘King of Romance’ to fawn over, this movie also featured many iconic songs. Manpreet Kaur and Pamela Chopra ( wife to veteran producer-director Yash Chopra who also produced this movie) lent their voices to the song.
Among classics like ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’, ‘Mere Khwabon Mein’ ‘Zara sa Jhoom Loon Main’ this gem often gets overlooked. However no other song in this movie reflects the longing for a loved one like this masterpiece. Composed by the legendary musical duo Jatin-Lalit and penned by Anand Bakshi, this song also encapsulated the spirit of ‘Karwa Chauth’ ritual through a couple of memorable lines “Tere haath se peekar paani, daasi se ban jaoon rani”. ( By drinking a glass of water from your hands, I transform from a servant to a queen). This couplet depicted the quiet pride and joy felt by wives who observe this ritual.

‘Chand Chupa Badal Mein’ (‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’)
Almost no one ( at least not us 90’s kids) can forget this classic. Featuring a charismatic Salman Khan ( at his peak charm) and an ethereal Aishwarya Rai, this song still resonates after decades. Composed by Ismail Darbar and penned by Mehboob, this Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik duet is the perfect amalgam of romance and class.
‘Bole Chudiyan’ (‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’)
Although this Jatin-Lalit song is primarily a peppy number depicting the budding attraction between Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s characters Rohan and Pooja, the song does have a memorable sequence dedicated to the Karwa Chauth ritual. The lines ‘Apni maang suhagan ho, sang hamesha saajan ho’ (May my forehead be filled with vermillion and may my husband live long) reflects the prayer of a loving and devoted wife. This song also features the evergreen Bollywood duo Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. As always the pair was extremely convincing as the bickering yet very much in love couple. Several singers like Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurti, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan and Amit Kumar lent their voices for this song.
'Agar Tum Mil Jao'('Zeher')
Composed by Anu Malik, this is a soulful yet passionate song that embodies the unconditional love of a wife. The song was brought to life by the saccharine vocals of Shreya Ghoshal. Starring a smouldering Emraan Hashmi and a coy Shamita Shetty, this song was one of the highlights of 'Zeher'. (2005 film)
