Bitter-sweet victory for Vivo: Lockdown may affect smartphone sales despite huge stockpiles with vendors

Vendors planned the stockpiles ahead of the much-awaited IPL.

Vivo's sales stood at 6.7 million units, accounting for one in every five phones sold in India.
Chinese smartphone company Vivo shipped more units in India than Samsung for the first time ever in Q1 2020, as per data from Canalys. Vivo sold more than twice as many smartphones to vendors as compared to the year-ago period. The company’s sales stood at 6.7 million units, accounting for one in every five phones sold in India.

Xiaomi, which sold 10.3 million phones in the first quarter of 2020, accounts for 31% of India’s smartphone market. Samsung’s shipments fell 14 percent to 6.3 million units, placing it above Chinese rivals Realme and Oppo. Despite the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian market for smartphones expanded by 12 percent year-on-year.

However, the sales figures for the second quarter of 2020 might not reflect the numbers posted in Q1. India went into a nationwide lockdown in late March, effectively banning the sale of “non-essential” commodities through online platforms – one of the major sources of orders for smartphones.

Moreover, the figures from Q1 point to the dominance of Chinese players in the Indian smartphone market. The Vivo brand is owned by BBK Electronics, a Chinese company that also owns Realme, Oppo, and OnePlus. Their combined market share would cross the 40%-mark.

Adding to that, Xiaomi’s 31% market share, Chinese brands account for seven in ten smartphones shipped in India. Xiaomi maintained its lead, with rivals enduring mixed fortunes. Canalys notes that its investment in building local supply chains and its efficient online market strategies have boded well for sales.

“Vivo’s victory is bitter-sweet. The high sell-in this quarter was mainly due to planned stockpiles ahead of the high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the unplanned lockdown at the end of March has disrupted the vendor’s plans. With IPL postponed, and much of its inventory in offline channels locked out, Vivo will struggle to see a quick sell-through when the lockdown lifts” said Canalys Analyst Madhumita Chaudhary.

She added that smartphone shipments are likely to plunge in Q2 2020, as vendors grapple with both supply and demand-side issues even after the lockdown is lifted. “While parts of India emerge out of the lockdown and the government works out an exit strategy, worker availability, which depends heavily on opening state borders and allowing public transport, will be a key issue for vendors and ODMs.

“Additional manpower regulations due to COVID-19, like in China, is likely to slow down resumption activities in factories across India, directly impacting production capacity. Consumer demand, however, is likely to be more robust. Online channels are likely to emerge the winners as public fear of the virus deters consumers from buying offline,” she said.
