NEW DELHI: The smog, precipitated by stubble-burning and pollution, has left most of North India breathless. Consequently, it's been a health hazard for those venturing out of homes with many complaining of irritation in the eye, palpitation, cough, sore throat and respiratory issues including wheezing. While masks for the outdoor and air purifiers for the home environment can help work in the short-term, the body also needs to build on its immunity.
Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, known for her health and wellness programmes, has listed a few easy remedies, sourced from the kitchen cabinet, that can help the body recover its lost strength and reverse the ill effects. In a Facebook post on Monday, the 46-year-old nutritionist recommended the use of a few key ingredients, herbs and spice that can provide some succour from air pollution.
The Mumbai-based dietician highlighted the positives of sugarcane, and said that it beats lethargy caused due to smog, and improves mood. She also wrote that it helps detoxify the liver, boosts the immune system, and could be the "best mid-meal (before noon) option" that can be chewed or had in the form of fresh juice.
The health expert also shared two home remedies that are a sure shot win.
1. Ginger powder, jaggery and ghee laddoos Diwekar said that this bite-sized laddoo is more effective if it is consumed right after returning home, braving the outside air. These laddoos can prevent inflammation and flu, keep sinuses clear, and ease the process of digestion.

How to make - Take equal amounts of dry ginger powder (sonth), jaggery (gur) and ghee - Mix it well and roll it into small balls - Start and end your day with one laddoo
Rujuta Diwekar's 2 home remedies will help you beat air pollution. 2. Milk, saffron, turmeric and basil seeds - nightcap According to Diwekar, this night-time drink can keep your health in check. Breaking down every ingredient, she stressed on the importance of each herb and spices used for this health drink. While the basil seeds (soaked sabja/tulsi seeds) will beat infections, allergies and bloating, turmeric (haldi) with milk works wonders as a recovery and anti-inflammatory combo. She also mentioned that oils from saffron (kesar) can prevent skin and hair damage.
How to make - Heat milk, and add saffron and turmeric while still on the boil
