Zoya, a diamond boutique from the house of Tata, presents ‘Finely Crafted Journeys’, conversations with women achievers, whose creativity and commitment to their craft have created something distinctive. This time, Zoya’s guest was Bahaar Dhawan Rohatgi.

An artist and lawyer, Rohatgi merges her twin passions for a truly unique perspective. Named ‘best emerging artist’ by ASSOCHAM at the SAARC Women Economic Forum, Rohatgi’s works have been exhibited in more than 25 shows in India and internationally. She also works on furthering art law in India.

What inspired you to pursue your craft as an artist?
I discovered art when I was five years old. It’s always been a part of my soul. My degree in law and understanding of world issues add a perspective that result in works that are detached from the straight jacket of definition, boundaries, and invoke thought or comment on contemporary society. All my experiences are camouflaged/masked under layers and a labyrinth of mixed media work. It is unique and fulfilling.

What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is all about perception and the ambivalent emotions it evokes — being intuitive, altruistic, fearless, and finding your reality beyond the realm of judgment of all rights and wrongs.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?
Each of my paintings tell a story, leaving the audience to discern the same. It is the only time when all three elements — my mind, body and soul — are completely in sync. Creating this experience empowers me while the joy in creating is unparalleled.

Jewellery, like art, is an extension of people’s personalities. I like Zoya’s impeccable attention to detail that evokes luxury and style. The versatility of designs enhance power in a corporate attire and look great with traditional outfits as well.

In 2015, a ring with the largest pink diamond was auctioned by Christie’s in Geneva and sold to a Hong Kong billionaire businessman Joseph Lau for $28.5 million. Named ‘Sweet Josephine’ after Lau’s then seven-year-old daughter Josephine, the ring is set with a cushion-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond, weighing approximately 16.08 carats, surrounded by more diamonds and mounted in platinum and gold. Billionaire Lau, a convicted felon and fugitive, bought a blue diamond the next day from Sotheby’s, naming it the Blue Moon of Josephine Diamond. It was speculated that Lau was laundering money with these purchases.
