Rajinikanth has completed more than five decades in cinema, but the superstar continues to keep himself active at 75. The actor recently celebrated 51 years in the film industry, and his fitness has also remained a talking point among fans. While many people associate exercise in old age with walking and gentle stretching, health experts say there is another important part that should not be ignored - strength training.

Rajinikanth celebrated 51 years in cinema

Rajinikanth completed 51 years in cinema on August 15. The milestone was celebrated on the sets of his upcoming film Dharman, where the actor cut a special cake with director Ashwath Marimuthu and members of the cast and crew.

At 75, Rajinikanth continues to maintain an active lifestyle. He has been seen performing exercises including squats and incline dumbbell presses under supervision. However, experts caution that his routine should not be treated as a template for everyone in the same age group.

Dr Sudhakar, as reported by NDTV, explained that the objective for people in their 70s should not be to match a celebrity's workout. Instead, exercise should help them remain strong enough to carry out everyday activities independently and safely.

Ageing naturally brings a decline in muscle mass and strength. Over time, this can affect balance, mobility and physical independence. Reduced muscle strength can also contribute to falls and frailty. This is why incorporating appropriate strength exercises into a fitness routine can be beneficial for older adults.

4 exercises people in their 70s can consider

There is no single workout that suits every person over 70. Someone who has exercised regularly throughout their life may have very different abilities from someone who is starting out. The type and intensity of exercise should therefore be adjusted according to an individual's health and fitness level.

1. Walking and aerobic exercise

Walking remains one of the simplest ways for older adults to stay active and support cardiovascular health. Depending on a person's physical condition, other low-impact aerobic activities may also be considered. Experts recommend increasing duration or intensity gradually rather than suddenly taking on strenuous exercise.

2. Resistance training

Strength exercises can help preserve muscle mass and improve functional strength. Depending on their abilities, older adults may consider modified squats, resistance-band exercises, light weights or bodyweight movements.

However, people with existing medical conditions, joint problems or heart and vascular issues should discuss the appropriate exercise intensity with their doctor before starting or changing a routine.

3. Balance exercises

Balance can become more difficult with age, which can increase the risk of falls. Simple balance-focused movements can help older adults work on stability. These should be performed in a safe environment and with support if required.

4. Flexibility and mobility

Gentle stretching and mobility exercises can help maintain the range of movement needed for everyday tasks. These exercises should be controlled and comfortable, without forcing a joint or causing significant pain.

What should exercise look like after 70?

According to Healthline, Regular physical activity can help older adults sleep better, manage blood pressure and lower the risk of conditions such as dementia, heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. It can also strengthen bones, improve balance and reduce the risk of falls. Seniors should aim for around 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, but beginners can start slowly with 10-15 minute sessions. Walking, swimming, cycling, dancing and water aerobics are some simple options.

A good senior fitness routine should also include strength, flexibility and balance exercises. Simple activities such as wall push-ups, abdominal contractions, gentle stretches and standing on one leg can help improve overall fitness. Anyone with an existing health condition or those starting exercise after a long break should speak to a doctor before beginning a new routine.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth's fitness routine is taking place alongside a busy professional schedule. Dharman, directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, is produced by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran under Raajkamal Films International and Turmeric Media. The film marks Rajinikanth's 173rd project and also features Simran and Raashii Khanna. Production is currently underway.
