Uber’s latest round of layoffs has left thousands of employees facing an uncertain next step, but one former employee is trying to turn a difficult moment into an opportunity. Kim Wilkes, a marketing professional and former Uber employee, took to social media after the company’s restructuring and reached out to those affected. Alongside offering emotional support, she offered to make introductions, review resumes and help impacted workers explore job opportunities at her current company across different teams and locations.

Former Uber employee offers support after layoffs

Kim Wilkes, a marketing professional who previously worked at Uber, took to social media and wrote about the impact of the layoffs. “It’s always disappointing to see a company announce layoffs,” Wilkes wrote, adding that the latest news from Uber was no different. According to Wilkes, more than 3,000 people were being impacted as Uber restructured its operations, reduced layers and made changes to how and where its teams work. The layoffs were particularly personal for Wilkes because some of the people she knew from her time at Uber were among those affected. “My heart goes out to them and to everyone else waking up today trying to figure out what comes next,” she wrote.

Layoffs do not define anyone

Beyond expressing sympathy, Wilkes encouraged people affected by layoffs not to view the job loss as a reflection of their professional worth. She urged impacted employees to remember that a layoff does not erase their previous accomplishments or the skills and experience they can bring to a future employer. “Please don’t let a layoff define how you see yourself or the work you’ve done,” Wilkes wrote. She added that there are “a LOT of people” willing to help those navigating an unexpected career transition.

Offering referrals and resume help

Wilkes also made her support practical by inviting people affected by the layoffs to contact her. She said she would be happy to make introductions, review resumes or help in whatever way she could. Her message highlights how professional networks can become particularly valuable after layoffs, when former colleagues and industry connections may help affected workers discover roles that are not yet on their radar. Wilkes also pointed to current hiring opportunities as a source of hope for those looking for their next role.

Rather than simply offering encouragement, Wilkes used her post to direct affected employees towards specific opportunities where they could potentially put their experience to use.

Netizens react

Netizens praised Kim Wilkes for offering practical support rather than just sympathy. One user said former colleagues stepping up can make a “big difference” during layoffs, while another called her response “exactly the kind” that helps, highlighting her offers to make introductions. Others noted that Uber’s latest cuts reflect a broader pattern of layoffs across big tech, with one user saying the situation now appears increasingly “out of the ordinary.”
