How much sleep is really enough? While the answer keeps fluctuating, it is still recommended to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. But around 40 per cent of people are sleeping less than average 7 hours per night, according to a new study conducted using data by Apple Watch.
As per of the Apple Heart & Movement Study conducted by Apple and the Brigham and Women's Hospital, of 42,000 Apple users that participated for the study, only 31 per cent people were averaging the minimum recommended 7 hours of sleep every night.
Poor sleep can lead to many health-related complications such as dementia, cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, cognitive decline, blood sugar, cholesterol levels and higher blood pressure.
The study revealed that the average time most participants spent sleeping was under 6 hours and 27 minutes. Around 20 per cent participants only got between five to six hours of sleep each night, with 8.8 per cent sleeping less than 5 hours.
The researchers used the data collected by Apple Watch wearers over the course of a 4-month between February 1, 2022 to June 1, 2022. Around 42,455 people shared their sleep data for at least 10 nights for the study. The study highlighted the difference in sleep during weekdays and weekends as most people, close to 56.6 per cent, stayed up late during weekends and went to bed past 12am.
How To Track Your Sleep And Improve Your Sleep Habits Sleep plays a very important role in your health as it impacts your metabolism, brain health and heart. There are ways you can improve your sleep cycle and get that much needed slumber. Here are a few things you can try:

Start A Routine The first step to improving your sleep cycle is to set a target bedtime and follow the routine. This will help you realise how much sleep you are getting and help you plan your lifestyle better in order to accommodate enough sleep. Track Your Sleep Previous studies have shown that when people don't measure their sleep, they often tend to overestimate the amount of sleep they get. But with Apple Watch, you can track your sleep and understand your true sleep patterns. Set up Sleep on Apple Watch which helps you create personalised sleep schedules to help meet your sleep goals and improve your health.
Sleep on Apple Watch gives you the option to set Sleep Goals, Bedtime and Wake Up times and Sleep Focus.
'Silent' & Snooze Once the routine is set and the apps are set up, it's important to maintain consistency. However, many times people end up stretching their bedtime by being on their phones or constantly scrolling on social media. In order to fix your sleep patterns, ditch the phone when you get on your bed or you're preparing to call it a day. Put the phone on silent and away from your sleeping place before you hit snooze.
