Are your daily habits ruining your gut health? AIIMS doctor shares 7 common causes of bloating and poor digestion
Gut health is something most of us ignore until it starts causing trouble. From bloating and acidity to low energy and even mood swings, your gut quietly affects more than just digestion. What you eat, how you sleep, and even your stress levels play a big role in keeping it balanced. You don’t need drastic changes to fix it. Simple habits like eating home-cooked meals, adding fibre, staying hydrated and not skipping meals can make a real difference. Recently, Harvard-trained AIIMS gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi shared a post on Instagram, listing 7 common habits that may be quietly damaging your gut health.

Overloading on fibre

While fibre is essential for good digestion, increasing it too rapidly can backfire. Sudden spikes in fibre intake often lead to bloating and discomfort instead of improving gut health. Gradual changes work far better.

Cutting out fats completely

Many people assume that avoiding fats is healthier, but that is not entirely true. Healthy fats play a crucial role in maintaining the gut lining and supporting overall digestive function.

Eating same foods every day

Sticking to a repetitive diet may seem safe, but it limits the diversity of your gut microbiome. A wider variety of foods helps nourish different types of beneficial bacteria.

Ignoring order of your meals

What comprises your first meal matters more than you think. Starting meals with refined carbohydrates can spike blood sugar levels and negatively impact digestion. A more balanced approach helps your gut function better.

Relying too much on protein bars and shakes

Convenient as they are, many packaged protein options are highly processed. Regularly depending on them may not support gut health the way whole, natural foods do.

Irregular eating patterns

Even if your meals are healthy, inconsistent timing can disrupt digestion. The gut thrives on routine, and erratic eating habits can throw it off balance.

Lying down right after eating

Post-meal habits matter more than we realise. Sitting or lying down immediately after eating can slow digestion, while staying upright allows the body to process food more efficiently.

In conclusion, Dr Saurabh Sethi stated that bloating is rarely caused by the food itself. Quantity, timing, and gut sensitivity determine whether a healthy food will cause discomfort.
