The actor is currently in New York, a city that has brought a wave of nostalgia, who spent three memorable years in the city while working on the medical drama New Amsterdam. This time, however, Kher has returned with theatre rather than television on his agenda. As he prepares to perform his musical play Jaane Pehchaane Anjane, the actor is revisiting familiar streets while creating an entirely new set of memories.

Anupam Kher returns to New York

Anupam Kher took to X to share his excitement after landing in New York, USA, revealing that returning to the city immediately brought back memories from an important chapter of his career. “Landed in New York! And so many beautiful memories came rushing back!” he wrote. The actor spent three years in New York while working on the series New Amsterdam. Looking back at that period, Kher said the experience came at a stage in his life when he had already spent many years working as an actor.

Yet the city gave him a fresh perspective. “At a stage in my life when I had already spent so many years acting, this city made me feel like a student again,” Kher wrote. He recalled spending his time learning, discovering and finding happiness in new experiences each day.


‘Somewhere, it reminds me of Mumbai’

For Kher, returning to New York was not simply about revisiting a professional chapter. Walking through its streets also brought a surprising sense of familiarity. “Walking these streets feels familiar,” he wrote, pointing to the city's energy, people and constant movement. The actor found a connection between New York and Mumbai, two cities he feels share a distinctive rhythm. “Somewhere, it reminds me of Mumbai,” Kher said. He added that both cities “seem to have a heartbeat of their own”, making it easy for people to find themselves moving along with their energy.

Why Anupam Kher is back in New York this time

While his earlier New York chapter was connected to New Amsterdam, this visit has a different purpose. Kher has travelled to the city with his musical play Jaane Pehchaane Anjane and is set to perform for audiences there. “This time, I am here with our musical play Jaane Pehchaane Anjane,” he wrote, adding that he could not wait to perform. For the actor, the timing has a special charm. A place filled with memories from an earlier stage of his career is now giving him the opportunity to create new ones through theatre. “A city full of old memories is about to give me some new ones!” Kher wrote.

Anupam Kher looks forward to theatre in New York

Sharing his excitement about the performance, Kher invited New York audiences to experience the play with him. “New York, let’s unfold the magic of theatre together!” he wrote before signing off with a message of love for the city and its audiences. His return therefore carries two threads at once: a reunion with a city that once made him feel like a student again and a fresh theatrical chapter that allows him to experience New York from a different perspective.

His fitness at 71

Recently, Anupam Kher also gave fans a glimpse of his fitness and adventurous spirit during an outing in Raleigh, North Carolina. At 71, the actor took on a 35-foot indoor rock climbing wall after initially having doubts about reaching the top. Remembering his childhood in Shimla, he told himself, “Chalo, let me try. So what if I am 71 now!” Despite being secured by a harness, Kher said he had to make every move himself using “just my bare hands and feet”. Reaching the top left him with a “wonderful sense of achievement” and greater faith in his abilities. Calling it the “triumph of human spirit”, Kher reflected that belief may not make a challenge easy, but it can give us “the courage to begin” and keep going.
