Ankur Warikoo's wife walked away from Rs 20 LPA job and instead chose happiness, organic farming and Rs 20,000 salary. Why?
Ruchi Warikoo's career journey challenges traditional success metrics. She left a Rs 20 lakh salary at a Channel for organic farming, accepting an 88% pay cut. This shift brought her happiness and fulfilment. Now, she manages her husband, Ankur Wa...

Ankur Warikoo recently shared the journey of his wife, Ruchi, and her unconventional career choices that have struck a chord online. He recalled meeting her when they were just 19. At the time, she did not have rigid career goals or a fixed path in mind. Instead, she was driven by curiosity and a desire to explore whatever interested her.
After graduating from college, she began working at a magazine. Her dream, however, was to work with a popular Channel. In time, she achieved that goal and spent around five years there, building a successful career and earning a salary of Rs 20 lakh annually between 2005 and 2010. Then life shifted.
Her career break
After the birth of their first child, she chose to take a break from her professional career. For the next four years, she focused on raising their son, stepping away completely from the corporate world. In 2014, she felt the urge to start something new. This time, it was far removed from her previous work. She turned to organic farming, a decision that came with a steep financial change. Her income dropped to around Rs 20,000 a month, marking an 88 per cent pay cut from her earlier salary. But according to Warikoo, this phase brought her a sense of happiness that her previous role had not.
Her decision was not driven by external validation or financial benchmarks, but by personal interest and satisfaction. It reflected a consistent pattern in her life, choosing what felt meaningful over what looked impressive on paper.
Her new career
Years later, her journey took another turn. Around three years ago, Warikoo asked her to step into a new role as his business manager. Since then, the two have been working together, building on their shared experiences and evolving careers. Looking back, Warikoo reflected on how unpredictable career paths can be. When they first met, neither of them could have anticipated where their professional lives would eventually lead. His own journey into teaching and content creation was equally unplanned. He emphasised that not every career follows a straight line. For some, it is a series of shifts shaped by curiosity, life stages and changing priorities rather than a fixed long-term plan.
Internet reacts
The story sparked thoughtful reactions, with many users reflecting on how careers evolve over time. One pointed out that careers are rarely linear and are instead shaped by a series of aligned choices, where what looks like a step down on paper may actually bring someone closer to a more fulfilling life. Others contrasted traditional career paths focused on stability and income with newer mindsets that prioritise exploration, flexibility and purpose. Several users also noted that choosing happiness over societal definitions of success takes courage and helps normalise unconventional journeys. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
