Tips for a first time solo traveller “Keep in mind the three Ps when travelling solo for the first time: Passport, purse and phone. Ensure you keep these safe. And secondly, ensure you have a Plan B in place.
“My personal experiences have taught me to ensure that there is enough time between connecting flights and to have native currency handy wherever you go. Also, when planning your travel, keep in mind that not all hotels are as accommodating regarding requests for early check-ins and late check-outs.”
Friend for life “This happened during a flight back from Mumbai to Delhi, where I met an 80-year-old gentleman who shared some life-altering experiences. Full of humour and reflection, the gentleman lived his life prioritising people and relationships over material gains. His quote ‘pair garam, pet naram, dimag thanda’ [remain on the move, with a light appetite for worldly possessions and have a cool mindset] has remained with me even today.”
Out of my comfort zone “I was travelling to the company headquarters in Grand Rapids via Chicago. Due to bad weather, the flight re-routed and I reached a day later than I originally planned. Three hours of security procedures meant I missed my connecting flight. My bags also didn’t arrive on time.

“I ultimately booked a rental car and drove in the US for the first time, three hours straight after a tiring journey. But the incident taught me that being adaptive is key to dealing with unexpected situations. And plus, every bad experience becomes a great story.
“Always be prepared for change. Be ready to communicate and make friends when on the road. Always carry a handbag with your essentials, so you’re ready for the unexpected.”
A journey cut short “Once, during the immigration process, I felt pain and discomfort in my chest. The airline staff referred me to the resident airport doctor who put a heart tablet below my tongue without much inspection. I took the pill and went back to immigration. The next thing I know is I am in the hospital. Luckily, it wasn’t serious. But I learnt that your body gives you signals, and you should always take them seriously. Respect it, worship it, take care of it.”.
