For many Bollywood fans, Amitabh Bachchan's home in Mumbai is a well-known landmark, attracting crowds every Sunday who hope to catch a glimpse of the superstar. However, beyond the photographs and celebrity sightings, the names of his bungalows each carry their own unique stories. Some are linked to family memories, while others have become closely associated with the actor’s personal and professional life.

The Bachchan family owns several properties in Mumbai’s upscale Juhu neighbourhood. Here is a look at five bungalows associated with Amitabh Bachchan and the stories behind their distinctive names.

1. Prateeksha: The Bachchan family’s first home

Prateeksha holds a special place in the Bachchan family’s history. It was the first bungalow that Amitabh Bachchan and his wife, Jaya Bachchan, bought together. The house witnessed their children, Abhishek and Shweta Bachchan, growing up and became the setting for several important family moments. Abhishek also married actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan at the property.

The name was chosen by Amitabh’s father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. During an earlier episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the veteran actor explained that he had asked his father why he had named the house Prateeksha. His father pointed him towards a line from his poem, ‘Swagat sabke liye hain par nahi hain kisi ke liye Prateeksha (It is welcome for all, but wait for none).'”

In November 2025, Prateeksha reportedly made headlines when Amitabh gifted the bungalow, estimated to be worth around Rs 50 crore, to his daughter Shweta Bachchan.

2. Jalsa: The home where Big B lives

Jalsa is perhaps the most recognisable of Amitabh Bachchan’s properties. Located in Juhu, the two-storey bungalow is the family’s primary residence. Fans regularly gather outside its gates on Sundays in the hope of seeing the actor.

The property reportedly has a living area of around 10,125 square feet. According to reports, filmmaker Ramesh Sippy gifted it to Amitabh for his role in the 1982 film Satte Pe Satta.

The name Jalsa means a celebration or gathering, a fitting description for a home that has become a landmark for the actor’s admirers.

In a 2023 interview with Tweak India, professional astro-architect Neeta Sinha, who has worked with celebrities including Amitabh, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, said the property was originally called Mansa. It was later renamed Jalsa on the advice of an astrologer.

3. Janak: Amitabh’s office and workspace

Located close to Jalsa, Janak serves a different purpose. Rather than being the family’s main residence, the property is used as Amitabh’s office and workspace.

Reports state that the Bachchan family purchased Janak in 2004. The actor reportedly holds meetings and carries out professional work there. The property is also said to have a private gym, allowing him to maintain his fitness routine.

The word Janak means “father” and is also associated with King Janaka, the father of Sita in the Ramayana. While the name has a clear cultural and familial association, the precise reason Amitabh chose it for the property has not been firmly established.

4. Vatsa: A property linked to commercial rentals

Vatsa is another property associated with the Bachchan family in Juhu. Unlike Jalsa and Prateeksha, which are closely linked to the family’s personal life, Vatsa has been reported to serve as an investment property.

Media reports have linked the property to commercial leases involving banks. The exact current tenancy arrangements, however, would need to be verified.

The word Vatsa comes from Sanskrit and can mean a calf or child. While the meaning offers an interesting connection to the family-oriented names of the Bachchans’ properties, there is no confirmed explanation for why the bungalow was given this name.

5. The bungalow behind Jalsa

In 2013, Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan reportedly purchased another bungalow behind Jalsa. The property, measuring approximately 8,000 square feet, expanded the family’s real estate holdings in the neighbourhood.

Reports at the time described the acquisition as an extension of the family’s existing residential estate. Unlike Jalsa, Prateeksha and Janak, a widely documented explanation for this property’s name has not been established in the information available.
