Specifications: 1.28-inch transflective screen, 176 x 176 pixels, activity tracking, sleep tracking, heart rate monitor, 3ATM waterproof, Bluetooth 4.1, 32 grams

Amazfit has been building up its smartwatch range in India from the past year. Now the company has launched its entry-level smartwatch, Amazfit Bip Lite – a toned-down version of their existing Amazfit Bip smartwatch.

Just like the Amazfit Bip, the Bip Lite also has a square shape display with a transflective screen. There are advantages of having a transflective display as well as disadvantages. The advantages include low battery consumption and ease of readability even under direct sunlight. Disadvantages are that it shows basic 8-colour and in low light its not readable without switching on the backlight. Considering there are smartwatches available with a full-colour screen like the Aqfit W8 and Noise ColorFit Pro in the same price range, the Bip Lite seems less attractive. What we liked is that it is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and has an anti-fingerprint coating but the thick bezels around the screen are a turn-off.

Build quality is impressive and we liked the matte black finish on the frame. The soft silicone wrist band is comfortable to wear for long durations and is designed to fit on slim as well as thick wrists. There is a hardware button on the right side for backlight: it can be configured to launch a specific activity tracking on long-press too which is a handy function.

The Bip Lite works with both Amazfit app as well as the Mi Fit app. It connects over Bluetooth for transferring data to the companion app where you can view it in an easy to understand graphical format. Like any smartwatch, the Bip Lite also tracks your activity and sleep. There is also an option to track your heart rate including a continuous heart rate tracking option but keep in mind this impacts the battery life.

The watch is also capable of showing incoming notifications from the phone and you can even set it to give sedentary reminders if you sit for too long. It surprised us that the Bip Lite is also 3 ATM waterproof – you can wear it while swimming. However, there is no swim tracking mode on the watch. Being a toned-down version, it offers limited sports tracking modes. You only get the option to track walking, running, treadmill and cycling. Our activity tracking results were different by approx. 10% when compared to a Fitbit while the heart rate tracking there was a difference of 3-4 beats. Sleep tracking was spot-on with details about light and heavy sleep visible neatly on the app.

One of the things that we didn’t like was that there were limited watch face options available for the Bip Lite. Also, keep in mind that compared to the Amazfit Bip, this one lacks a built-in GPS and uses connected GPS. What impresses most is the watch’s battery life. Amazfit claims up to 45 days of battery life but we got 34 days of backup on a single charge which is impressive. The watch charges from 0 to 100% in just over 2 hours.

At the asking price, the Amazfit Bip Lite impresses with its battery life and features. However, its screen is an acquired taste and users might not appreciate it when compared to other smartwatch options available today. For fitness tracking, you also have the option to go for a fitness band with a full colour display like the Honor Band 4 and the upcoming Mi Band 4 at a lower price.

Fitso gives you recommendations on the basis of your BMI (which it calculates according to the height and weight your input). If you want to lose weight, it will give you the option to track your daily calories intake with a diet journal as well as ask you to burn calories with physical activity. You need to set a target weight and choose whether you want to do only a diet or diet & exercise. We like the clean app interface. You can also opt for a coach service which starts at just Rs 149/week.

As the name suggests, this free app helps you calculate your calorie intake basis what you eat and drink. We liked that it has an option of adding how much weight you want to gain/lose per week (and it accordingly informs how many calories you should consume each day). As long as you input your food and drink correctly, the app shows you a nutrient breakdown, making it easy to see how much protein, fat and sugar you have consumed. You can view your progress in a graphic form, sync data with third party devices and apps as well as have the app remind you to eat food on time.

A smart weighing scale helps you keep a track of various parameters. Apart from your weight, a smart scale can typically measure BMI, muscle mass, bone mass, body fat, basal metabolism and visceral fat. All the data is synced with a companion app for easy tracking. Some apps even let you create individual profiles — so that all the people using it can track weight loss progress individually. Some of the better options we reviewed include the Mi Body Composition Scale (Rs 1,999) and the Lenovo HS10 Smart Scale (Rs 2,799).

A dedicated fitness band is great for tracking your daily activity (as opposed to having an app on your phone). You can buy one starting as low as Rs 1,200 going up to Rs 20,000 or more. We recommend getting a fitness band that offers a heart rate tracker, good battery life and water resistance. We always recommend Fitbit if you can spend more. They have some of the best fitness bands like the Alta HR and upcoming Charge 3. However, their products are usually priced Rs 10k onwards. If you want to spend less, check out the following options.
