Pros: Circular amoled screen looks amazing, lightweight, nicely designed watch faces, works with iOS & Android, built in GPS, can make phone calls on it (when paired & connected), 5-day battery
Cons: All-plastic body doesn’t inspire much confidence, waterproof but not for swimming, limited watch faces, proprietary operating system (there are no additional apps for it)
Amazfit is a brand of smart wearables made by Huami, which is a Xiaomi-backed company.

They’ve launched products like the BIP, Pace, Stratos and Cor. The Verge is their latest smartwatch and the focus here is on affordability while offering several premium features.
Our major complaints with their previous smartwatches were the high price and the weak display with the ‘flat tyre’ bottom section. Both things have been addressed with the Verge. It has a beautiful 1.3-inch circular amoled screen (360 x 360 pixels) with bright, vivid colours and deep blacks — at par with premium smartwatches like Galaxy Watch. You can choose to store music on it, transferred from your phone. You can get it in three colours: Moonlight White, Sky Grey or Twilight Blue. The colours are attractive but two things you should know upfront — it’s an all-plastic watch (both strap and casing) and it uses non-standard watch bands. Starting it up and pairing is a straightforward process once you get the Amazfit app.
You can choose to store music on it, transferred from your phone. Of the 4GB internal memory, you get about half of that space for your own use. While the operating system is proprietary, the interface is intuitive and the watch faces are nicely designed. That being said, there are only 11 watch faces with no option to add any more officially. You can download third party watch faces and install them (watch faces have a .wfz extension and are available at www.amazfitwatchfaces.com) but you do so at your own risk.

Fitness, sleep tracking and notifications work as expected. It does support raise to wake but the display stays locked by default — you need to either press the button or do a double tap on the screen to use all functions. From there you can swipe up to see notifications, swipe down for status/settings and swipe left to see apps. You can take calls on the Verge and it works well. You can also initiate calls from the watch itself. Note that the calling function is not enabled for iPhones.
Overall, we found the Verge to be a comfortable and full featured smartwatch at a nice price. If you don’t need to install any additional apps, you don’t need Android Wear anyway. It lasts over 5 days on a single charge (with daily step + sleep tracking) and worked well in our time with it.

Touch and voice controls are passé. The latest temptation is communicating with your gadgets through your thoughts. And that’s possible with a process called internal vocalisation or subvocalisation. Researchers at the MIT Media Lab have created a prototype (AlterEgo) that you wear on your face. It is capable of detecting tiny shifts that occur when you subvocalise, while saying words to yourself in your head. The wearable can detect and translate it into a meaningful command for a computer.
