Ahead of Jailer 2 release, Rajinikanth reveals why he agreed to the sequel after rejecting Baasha 2 and Petta 2
Rajinikanth is all set for the release of Jailer 2, a surprising turn after previously turning down sequels for Baasha and Petta. While he expressed skepticism about sequels, he recently revealed what made him say yes to Jailer 2 offer. Set to rel...

Why Rajinikanth rejected Baasha 2 and Petta 2
Speaking at the film’s pre-release event, Jailer 2 Super Show, Rajinikanth explained that, "I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour, and turn it into another film. I was approached for ‘Baasha 2’, and Karthik Subbaraj also came to me with a proposal for ‘Petta 2’, which would have extended Vijay Sethupathi’s character. But I wasn’t interested in either sequel.”As Rajinikanth explained, he feels some sequels simply take the original film and add a few new elements to create another instalment. He does not want to return to a successful film just for the sake of extending its story.
His decision to turn down the two projects makes his return in Jailer 2 particularly interesting. The actor has now revealed what made Nelson Dilipkumar’s film different from the other sequel proposals he received.
How Jailer’s ending convinced Rajinikanth to return
Rajinikanth said watching Jailer again after its OTT release helped him understand the potential for a sequel. The film’s ending, in particular, gave him a reason to revisit the story."After Jailer was released on OTT, I watched the movie again. Towards the end, when I was about to end Varma’s character, he says there’s a bigger network and that they wouldn’t spare him either. So, the story was perfect for a sequel.”
The actor believed the unresolved thread could be developed into a bigger story, making Jailer 2 a natural continuation of the original film.
The first Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, became one of Rajinikanth’s biggest hits. Its success raised expectations for the follow-up.
Jailer 2 release date, cast and music
Nelson Dilipkumar returns to direct Jailer 2, while Anirudh Ravichander is back as the music composer. The trailer suggests that the sequel will expand the scale of the first film, with more action and a larger world surrounding Rajinikanth’s character. The makers have also released the film’s second single, One Sun, One Moon, in September. Composed by Anirudh, the track features vocals by him and MS Krsna, with lyrics penned by Heisenberg and Super Subu.
With the original creative team returning and the first film’s ending providing a starting point for the new story, Jailer 2 is among the much-anticipated Tamil releases of the year.
Jailer 2 is scheduled to release in theatres on October 15, 2026.
