Why were Nana Patekar’s last rites held late at night?
Speaking to the media after the funeral, Malhar explained that the family had been in Goa and needed to bring the actor’s mortal remains to their farmhouse in Pune. The journey took more time than they had expected, delaying their arrival.According to a video shared by ANI, Malhar said, "Aisa nahi hai ki itni raat ko kyun kiya, kal kyun nahi kiya. Hame laga kyunki aaj subha subha ye hadsa hua toh already samay kaafi beet chuka tha isliye humne socha ki aaj hi karengey.” (It isn't about why it was done so late at night and not tomorrow. We felt that since the tragedy occurred early this morning, considerable time had already passed, so we decided to do it today itself.)
Nana Patekar’s mortal remains were brought to his farmhouse in Donje village, where fans gathered to pay their respects. Many arrived with garlands and flowers, while others waited to catch a final glimpse of the veteran actor. According to reports, Patekar had expressed a wish to be cremated at his farmhouse.
His son Malhar lit the funeral pyre as family members and mourners gathered for the final rites. The ceremony was held with full state honours, marking the end of a career that spanned several decades in Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Jackie Shroff, filmmakers and political leaders pay tribute
Several members of the film industry travelled to Donje village to pay their respects to Nana Patekar and offer condolences to his family. Actor Jackie Shroff, filmmakers Anil Sharma and Anees Bazmee, and producer Firoz Nadiadwala were among those present at the funeral.Other renowned personalities from Bollywood, politics, sports and public life also attended the ceremony.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other political leaders also offered their condolences. Fadnavis paid tribute to Nana Patekar at Pune International Airport when the actor’s mortal remains arrived from Goa.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, Union ministers Ramdas Athawale and Murlidhar Mohol, and several state ministers and public representatives were also reported to have attended the last rites or paid their respects.
The gathering included fans who had followed Patekar’s work over the years. Chants of “Nana Amar Rahe” were heard as mourners said goodbye to the actor.
Nana Patekar's cause of death
Nana Patekar died in the early hours of Thursday at his residence in Goa. He was 75. He was reportedly suspected to have suffered a heart attack, although the exact cause of death was yet to be established.According to doctors at Manipal Hospital, the actor was administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for around 45 minutes before he was declared dead. A post-mortem examination was ordered to determine the precise cause.
Patekar was known for his intense performances and his ability to portray a wide range of characters. His notable films include Parinda, Krantiveer, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan and Natsamrat. Over the course of his career, he earned recognition for his work in both Hindi and Marathi cinema.
His death marks the end of a long journey in Indian cinema, leaving behind performances that audiences have remembered across generations.
