Rajinikanth is returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, and the sequel is already generating buzz ahead of its theatrical release. The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 15. With advance bookings reportedly pointing towards a strong opening, this is a good time to revisit the story, memorable cameos and box office performance of the 2023 blockbuster that introduced audiences to Tiger’s dangerous past.

According to the figures provided in the advance booking report, Jailer 2 has earned over Rs 57 crore through advance sales in India, while overseas opening-day bookings have reportedly crossed Rs 25 crore. The film has also reportedly sold 14.47 lakh tickets for its first day, generating Rs 30.90 crore in domestic advance sales.

Jailer quick recap: How Tiger Muthuvel Pandian's past returns

Released in 2023, Jailer follows Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, played by Rajinikanth, a retired jailer who lives a quiet life with his family. His peaceful routine changes when his son, Arjun, an assistant commissioner of police played by Vasanth Ravi, disappears while investigating a criminal network involved in stealing and smuggling temple idols.

The police suspect that Arjun may have died by suicide, but Tiger refuses to believe that his son is gone. He begins investigating the case and soon comes into conflict with Varman, the gangster played by Vinayakan who controls the smuggling operation.

When Varman's men threaten Tiger's grandson, the retired officer realises that protecting his family will require him to confront the gang directly. His family also discovers that Tiger is far more dangerous than his quiet appearance suggests. He was once a formidable jailer at Tihar prison and has built connections with powerful people during his years in service.

Tiger uses those connections to strike back at Varman. However, the conflict takes a personal turn when the gangster reveals that Arjun is still alive and offers to release him in exchange for an antique crown.

Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Sunil's cameos

One of the major attractions of Jailer was its ensemble cast and appearances by stars from different film industries. Mohanlal is seen playing Mathew, a Mumbai-based man with a smuggling background and Shiva Rajkumar makes an appearance as Narasimha, a reformed criminal from Karnataka. Sunil plays Blast Mohan, an actor and temple trustee who helps Tiger execute his plan to retrieve the antique crown.

With their help, Tiger sets up an elaborate scheme to get the crown back and free Arjun. The plan initially appears successful, but the reunion between father and son brings a devastating revelation.

Tiger learns that Arjun has been working with Varman and involved in the crimes he was supposed to investigate. The betrayal changes the direction of the story, forcing Tiger to choose between his love for his son and his determination to bring down the criminal network.

The climax of the story is when Tiger and his allies attack Varman's operation. Arjun refuses to surrender and tries to kill his father so Tiger tells his allies to shoot him. The movie ends with Tiger walking away, leaving behind the chain that held his son’s baby tooth. His victory is a deeply personal one.

Jailer box office collection

One of Rajinikanth's greatest box office achievements was Jailer. According to Sacnilk.com, the movie minted Rs 605 crore worldwide. Overseas markets contributed about Rs 198 crore, while India contributed about Rs 407 crore.

The film's combination of Rajinikanth's screen presence, Nelson's action-comedy style, its emotional father-son story and cameos helped it draw audiences across markets. The soundtrack and action sequences also became important parts of its theatrical appeal.

The first film also left room for another chapter. Although Tiger brings down Varman's operation, the story hints at a larger criminal network that may extend beyond the people he has already defeated. That possibility gives Jailer 2 an opportunity to explore new threats and reveal more about Tiger's past.

Stay tuned to see how Jailer 2 unfold. The film is hitting the theatres tomorrow (October 15).
