After Sydney shenanigans, Ashwin’s wife reveals that cricketer was in ‘unbelievable’ pain before Monday’s game

Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari earned India a memorable draw against Australia in Sydney.

Skipper Ajinkya Rahane also applauded Ashwin and Vihari for their fighter spirit on day five.
India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Monday proved that when it comes to delivering for the country, he can work a bat equally well. Despite being injured, Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari batted for over three hours to earn India a memorable draw against Australia in Sydney.

During his batting at the crease, Ashwin faced a lot of bouncers and a few short balls on his chest, but that did not stop the all-rounder from scoring the most crucial 39 runs off 128 balls.

It was later that Ashwin's wife Prithi, in a series of tweets, revealed that the cricketer was in unbelievable pain and wasn't even able to stand up straight on Monday morning.

Equally amazed and proud, Prithi wrote that the cricketer was not able to tie his shoelaces.

Expressing gratitude, the all-rounder replied to his wife's tweet: "Instant tears!! Thanks for being there with me through all this."

As the match progressed at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Prithi continued with her tweets, giving insights from the comfort of her home.

Apart from Ashwin, Vihari, too, was in a bad physical shape as he batted in pain after having pulled his hamstring during the match.

At the press conference which was held virtually, skipper Ajinkya Rahane also applauded Ashwin and Vihari for their fighter spirit on day five. “This is as good as winning a Test match,” Rahane said.

"When you come abroad and play a match like this, it was really special. Credit to Ashwin and Vihari for the way they batted, Pujara, Rohit, Pant everyone chipped into the team's cause. But credit to Vihari and Ashwin for batting 2.5 hours in the end," said Rahane, as quoted by ANI.

Ashwin’s heroic act today earned him a lot of praise on Twitter. Calling Ashwin the “best cricketing mind in the present Indian Team”, a Twitter user said.

Another user found himself in a dilemma to choose between Ashwin's bowling or batting.

Former Australian cricket team captain Ricky Ponting was lauded as well as criticised for his aggression on the field. In the 2010 Ashes series against England, which Australia lost, Ponting got into a heated debate with on-field umpire Aleem Dar. “I understand that I overstepped the mark yesterday. I was charged with dissent for having a prolonged discussion with the umpires out in the middle. Looking back at it last night I realised that it didn’t look good,” Ponting later said in interviews.
