Peppy colourful furniture, carefully-curated art and a photo from Ladakh dominate MobiKwik co-founder Upasana Taku’s vision of an ideal den.

Dreaming space
“I don’t have a proper den right now, but the ‘den of my dreams’ would be a combination of the pieces I’ve collected and what I would like to acquire. It would be a cosy, well-lit place with lots of sunlight during the day and mood lights in the evening. It would have French windows with white frames and peppy, colourful furniture like a nice blue chair or a lazy boy recliner in lime green (which I already have). It would have a television for catching up on movies and a music system will come in handy when we plan for a nice evening with light dancing and fun. I’d also like to have a poker table and small bar unit with two bar stools.”

My ideal den…
“Would serve multiple purposes – a lounge, my thinking place, a place for a fun night with friends or a quiet evening with family.”

Signature pieces
“I have a bookshelf in every room of my house so an old-school library will definitely find a place in my den. Perhaps a zig-zag book case that could rest in a corner. There would also be a special section for wine within the bar unit – a cooler for white wine and a wooden cupboard for red. On the walls, I would have a bunch of classic movie posters (English, Indian and world cinema) and perhaps some Eminem and Pink Floyd.”

It can be anywhere - the living room, the bedroom, or even the terrace balcony.

Just choose a bright corner of any part of the house. Add a colourful cotton rug, throw some pillows, a lamp (go for something unique, such as marble), a handful of tabletops, and a bright painting on the wall to tie it all together.

In a small apartment, visible storages such as cabinets, baskets and boxes may make your space look cluttered. The ideal solution would be to opt for hidden storages.

The key is making use of all the empty spaces such as the crawl space underneath the stairs, empty space under the bed or even the gaps beneath the floor boards.

“I like to buy art from countries that I visit. They are not very expensive pieces of art or from well known global artists but I have collected a few from Europe, Turkey and other countries. In my den, I would have two large thin orange paintings with some element of gold hanging, perhaps depicting a trumpet or various musical instruments. And I would definitely have a large size version of a picture I had taken in Ladakh that I really like.”

A signpost for the den
“Calmness and happiness are a state of mind.”
