Sangita Sinh Kathiwada, founder of Melange, describes the different elements that make her urban den a reflective, green haven.

My personal den is…
“Something filled with light and greenery. It is not a man’s study. It is very feminine and meant for relaxing, reading the newspapers, contemplating, thinking, meditating and doing yoga. Each window overlooks a mini terrace full of beautiful plants potted or grown by me. It’s roomy (without too much furniture) and has a sunroof too. But my working space is completely different. It’ll be always cluttered, dark and small. Almost like a cave I can go into and do my work without the distraction of nature.”

The essential furniture

“A dusky Indian low chair that I can read my newspapers in, a comfortable sofa, lots of cushions that you can move around to create space or lie down, some lamps and a beautiful old Afghan Kilim on a black floor. I never buy statement pieces. I pick pieces and they become statements because of the way I use them. For example, a lovely large round velvet cushion thrown on an old Afghan rug becomes a statement because I genuinely use it that way. I sit on the floor or lie (on my back) with the cushion and read my paper.”

One thing your den would never have…
“A plastic jug or flask. Plastic is a no-no.”

A space for friends…
“I’ll have family and really close friends over because it brings that lovely energy but I’m very, very particular about not having strangers.”

On the walls
“I have brilliant photographs or a work of contemporary art that’s not busy or cluttered but contemplative. My husband’s and my mother’s photos also hang in my den. They’ve both left this earth and are in a better place and I sort of talk to them every morning.”

Back to nature
“I don’t like to cut flowers. Instead all the fallen flowers from our garden will be collected and put in a copper bowl with a little water.”

No-gadget zone
“My den is my meditative space, my spiritual space, my inward space. My den is my no-working space, so when I’m doing yoga, meditation, everything will be kept outside. I don’t have a TV, music system or even a clock there.”

One adjective to describe my den
“Silence.”

Kapil Dev vs Dawood Ibrahim

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar, in an interview a few years ago, revealed how captain Kapil Dev drove gangster Dawood Ibrahim out of the team's dressing room. He said that during a tournament in Sharjah in the '80s, Ibrahim came into the team's dressing room and said that if they defeated Pakistan, each player would get a car from him. An angry Dev had then reportedly told Dawood to get out. Former BCCI secretary Jaywant Lele has also mentioned the incident in his book, 'I was There —Memoirs of a Cricket Administrator'.

Gilbert Arenas vs Javaris Crittenton

The NBA team Washington Wizards's Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton never saw eye to eye. In 2009, the duo were playing a card game on the team plane, where they had a huge fight. Since the fight, Arenas, then the Wizards' biggest star, had brought four guns to the locker room. Two days later, during team practice, he taunted Crittenton with the guns. To make matters worse, Crittenton responded by taking a loaded gun back to the team's dressing room, and pointed it at Arenas. The infamous gun showdown led both players to be suspended for the remainder of the season. Two years later, Crittenton was convicted of manslaughter in 2011, when he shot dead a woman in Atlanta.
