If it wasn’t for a conversation with his father, Archit Gupta, the CEO of ClearTax, would never have been the successful entrepreneur that he is.

“It all began in the sweltering Delhi summer of 2010. I was then an engineer at Data Domain in the US and was visiting my parents. My dad and I began to speak about the complexities of the government’s recently introduced online tax filing portal,” he told a business magazine recently.

Gupta learnt from his father that not only an average tax payer, but also professionals like him struggled to master the portal.

“Whenever time permits, I go on a drive with my family and friends and the best time for that is during the monsoon. The picturesque locations within 200 km of Mumbai give enough reasons to plan those weekend getaways regularly. One of my memorable drives has been to Udaipur — a city that fascinates all with its forts, and palaces. The road to the city is smooth, fl anked by scenic beauty and many wildlife species, all of which makes it a perfect destination for a long weekend road trip.”

“One of the memorable long weekend trips in India would be the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur drive with my family. We started from Delhi. The drive on the Yamuna Expressway to the beautiful Taj Mahal was incredible. From there we decided to head to Jaipur which is around 250 km. India is a vibrant country where no two cities are the same. The dialect, food, culture and experience of three different cities in two days is one of my memorable weekend drives.”

“The government platform had an Excel-based tool. You had to download that thing and be very sure of what you were filing. Then you had to generate an XML file, which had to be uploaded manually,” Gupta said. He went back to his job and spent the next few months trying to gauge the feasibility of building a self-serving platform. The rest, as the cliché goes, is history.
