A day before LS polls begin, EC stalls Modi biopic; film to release in May-end now

NEW DELHI: A biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi biopic has been stalled by the Election Commission. The film directed by Omung Kumar, was supposed to have been released on April 12.

The EC decision comes a day after the Supreme Court ruled that it will not interfere in the decision of the film's release. The apex court left it to the discretion of the EC to take a call on the matter.



The EC in its decision on Wednesday noted that "any such film that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in the electronic media." Any biopic "which has the potential to disturb the level playing field during the elections should not be displayed," tt further added.

A statement from the EC also said that the biopic will now be released only once the Lok Sabha polls are concluded in May.


On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had quashed a petition filed by a Congress activist seeking stay on the release of the biopic and said the Election Commission would be an "appropriate" place to seek its redressal.


Earlier on Wednesday, the film was awarded a 'U' certificate, which was welcomed by the producer Ssandeep Singh. "We are very happy that we got the 'U' certificate from the Censor Board, and finally the film will be releasing on April 11. We are also very relieved that the Supreme Court has rejected the plea... It is clear now from everywhere," Singh said in a statement.


The plea in the apex court had sought the biopic being deferred till the Lok Sabha polls were concluded as the timing was designed to "manipulate, influence and impress viewers and voters."
