Many people think bloating is a sign of a “bad gut,” but the truth is often more surprising. Harvard-trained AIIMS gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi explains that even healthy foods can cause uncomfortable gas and bloating if eaten in the wrong way. From cruciferous vegetables to sugar-free products, everyday items often trigger fermentation in the gut. Understanding portion sizes, timing, and individual gut sensitivity is key to enjoying these foods without discomfort.

Dr Sethi highlights seven common culprits.

Certain vegetables

Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are rich in FODMAPs like raffinose, which gut bacteria ferment into gas, with raw forms causing the most bloating.

Beans and lentils

Beans and lentils, while high in fiber and oligosaccharides, can trigger sudden bloating spikes if introduced too quickly, though soaking and gradual increase help.

Dairy products

Dairy products—including milk, soft cheese, and ice cream—often cause bloating due to lactose intolerance. Yogurt is better tolerated, and hard cheeses contain lower lactose.

Certain fruits

Fruits like apples and pears, high in fructose and sorbitol, can ferment in the gut, making portion control essential.

Sodas

Diet carbonated drinks, including sparkling water, introduce gas that expands the stomach and contributes to bloating, a commonly overlooked factor.

Sugar-free items

Sugar-free products, such as gums and candies, contain sugar alcohols like sorbitol and xylitol, which ferment in the gut, meaning “sugar-free” does not always equal gut-friendly.

High-fibre

Whole wheat and high-fibre cereals, if introduced too suddenly, can overwhelm the gut, though fiber remains essential when increased gradually.

Gastro doc's message

The takeaway, according to Dr. Sethi, is that bloating is rarely caused by the food itself. Quantity, timing, and gut sensitivity determine whether a healthy food will cause discomfort. Daily clinic observations show these seven foods frequently trigger bloating, but understanding your own gut patterns allows people to enjoy them without elimination. The goal is not to remove these foods but to adjust intake in a way that aligns with individual gut tolerance, creating a healthier and more comfortable digestive experience.
