7 biggest iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max features for the first time on Apple devices: Variable-aperture camera to silicon battery

Apple hasn't radically changed the look of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but there is quite a bit that's new under the familiar exterior. The latest Pro models bring a variable-aperture main camera, Apple's first 2nm iPhone chip, a new C2 modem and a redesigned Dynamic Island, among other changes.

Some of these upgrades will be most noticeable in everyday use, while others are aimed squarely at photographers, videographers and power users. Here are seven of the biggest changes coming to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

1. The iPhone finally gets a variable-aperture camera

The 48MP Fusion Main camera gets one of the most significant camera upgrades in this generation: a variable aperture.


Instead of sticking to a fixed aperture, the camera can adjust how much light enters the lens depending on the shooting conditions. It also gives photographers greater control over depth of field.

There are four aperture settings — f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. The wider settings can be useful in low light, while stopping the lens down can keep more of a scene in focus. Apple is also adding new Pro Controls for users who want more hands-on control over shooting.

2. Apple's first 2nm iPhone chip

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are the first iPhones powered by Apple's 2nm A20 Pro chip. It features a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.

The move to a smaller manufacturing process isn't just about raw performance. Apple is also positioning the A20 Pro for more demanding on-device AI workloads while improving power efficiency.

Apple says the new thermal design can enable up to a 40% improvement in sustained performance over the previous generation, giving the chip more headroom during demanding tasks.

3. A new Apple-designed C2 modem

Apple is continuing its push to rely less on third-party modem technology with the new C2 cellular modem.

The C2 replaces the C1X used in the previous Pro generation. Apple says it can deliver faster upload speeds while consuming 15% less energy. US models also gain mmWave support.

For most users, this isn't likely to be a feature they actively notice. But the modem is an important piece of Apple's longer-term effort to bring more of the iPhone's core technology in-house.

4. The Dynamic Island can now show three Live Activities

The Dynamic Island is smaller on the iPhone 18 Pro models, but Apple is also making better use of the space.

The redesigned area can display up to three Live Activities simultaneously. That could be useful when keeping an eye on a sports score, following navigation or tracking another live update without repeatedly opening apps.

Face ID remains housed within the Dynamic Island, which continues to serve as both a hardware cutout and an information hub.

5. More manual controls in the Camera app

Apple is giving the native Camera app a more professional set of controls. Users can manually adjust settings such as shutter speed, white balance and focus rather than leaving everything to the phone's automatic processing.

There is also preview peaking, which makes it easier to check whether the intended subject is actually in focus.

For photographers and video creators, the bigger takeaway is that some of the controls that previously required third-party apps are now available directly in Apple's own Camera app.

6. Apple Reference Image aims to prove a photo is original

The iPhone 18 Pro also introduces a feature aimed at a problem that has become increasingly difficult to ignore: knowing whether a photograph is genuine.

Apple Reference Image is designed to create an authenticated record of an image captured by the iPhone. The system cryptographically signs information from the camera at capture, helping establish the provenance of the original image.

Apple is also supporting Google's SynthID content-authenticity protocol. With AI-generated and heavily edited images becoming harder to distinguish from photographs, Apple is betting that proving where an image came from will become increasingly important.

7. The biggest battery-life boost yet on an iPhone Pro Max

Battery life gets another major upgrade, particularly on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple says the Pro Max can deliver up to 43 hours of video playback, its biggest battery-life increase yet for an iPhone Pro Max. The improvement comes from a combination of the new Apple silicon, efficiency gains and a larger battery.

Charging has also been improved. Under Apple's stated conditions, the Pro models can reach 50% charge in around 15 minutes.

Taken together, the changes make the iPhone 18 Pro generation more than a routine performance refresh. The camera system gets more flexible, Apple's silicon and modem technology move another step forward, and several of the new features are aimed at giving users more control over what the iPhone can do.
