Imagine earning $320k (Rs 3 crore approx) total compensation in a year in the USA, and all of a sudden, you have to come back to India with a Rs 1.5 crore salary in hand in Navi Mumbai. Will that be a rational decision? An NRI dad of three took to Reddit and shared that he wants to be closer to his parents and wants his children to grow up around grandparents and cousins. Meanwhile, he asked the netizens if he is making the right call, financially. This is what the internet had to say.

The 36-year-old professional, currently in the US on an H1B visa with a November 2018 priority date, revealed that after more than 12 years abroad, he and his wife have decided to relocate their family of five to Navi Mumbai this June. The decision, he admitted, comes after “much thought” and internal debate.

On paper, his American life looks stable and secure. He earns roughly $320,000 a year in total compensation. His home in the US is fully paid off. His net worth stands at over $1 million, including the house. His three children, all between the ages of 6 and 9, are US citizens.

Internal transfer

But an internal transfer has changed the equation. His company has offered him a role in Navi Mumbai with an annual compensation of approximately Rs 1.5 crore, including equity. The move would cut his annual pay in half when converted directly. Yet for him, the decision isn’t only about currency conversion.

Family

His parents live in Hyderabad, and proximity to family has become a central factor in the conversation. He and his wife want their children to grow up around grandparents and cousins, something that has been missing while living overseas. At the same time, he is acutely aware of what he would be leaving behind: a paid-off home, a high-dollar salary, and the financial predictability that comes with it.

He turned to Reddit to ask strangers what many professionals quietly wonder: how does Rs 1.5 crore in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai actually feel compared to a $320k life in the US? He wondered if it would be a step down from his current lifestyle and if moving back was worth it.

He also raised practical concerns about his children. He worried that since his children were born and raised abroad, they would be able to adjust to Indian school and its lifestyle.

Reddit gives advice

Netizens rushed to the comment section to share their opinions. One user shared that in comparison to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai offered better quality of life, infrastructure, cafes and good residential areas. One pointed out that the young age of kids will, in fact, help them adapt faster in India now, than delaying the move to a later stage. Another person advised the dad to sell his US house and buy one in India, and he would still have Rs 4 crore, which he can invest. Also, the netizen called Rs 1.5 crore a decent compensation and 40-50% of it can be saved if he chooses not to enrol his kids in fancy schools. One user bluntly shared that the kids may absolutely hate the shift, while other users vouched for Navi Mumbai.
