A 25-year-old machine learning engineer has sparked conversation online after revealing that he earns between 6 and 6.5 million yen a year, roughly Rs 35–38 lakh. His story is not about years of corporate climbing or switching jobs repeatedly. It began straight out of campus, with a placement offer that changed everything.

Parshva Jain, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, recently shared details of his professional journey in a video posted on the Instagram page ‘Tech Minds Japan’. Introducing himself as an IT professional specialising in machine learning, Jain spoke about his salary, how he secured his role, and what the current tech landscape in Japan looks like.

How much does he earn?

According to Jain, his annual compensation stands at approximately 6–6.5 million yen. He clarified that this figure reflects his earnings in Japanese currency while working as a machine learning engineer in Japan. What makes his journey notable is how early it began. Jain did not move abroad after years of industry experience. Instead, he secured his position through campus placements soon after graduating from IIT Mandi, when a company visited his institute specifically for hiring.

International hiring

For professionals in India who aspire to work in Japan, Jain offered practical insights. He noted that securing roles in Japan as a fresh graduate through lateral hiring can be difficult. However, he suggested that prospects improve significantly at the mid-career and senior levels, where referrals and direct job applications become more viable pathways.
