Nagaland gets its first natural gas supply via National Gas Grid

Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited has supplied natural gas to Nagaland for the first time through the National Gas Grid after injecting gas into the Dergaon–Dimapur Pipeline.

Guwahati: Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) on Tuesday achieved a significant milestone in the development of the Northeast Gas Grid (NEGG) with the successful injection of natural gas into the Dergaon–Dimapur Pipeline, marking the first-ever supply of natural gas to Nagaland through the National Gas Grid.

The development marks a major step in strengthening the natural gas infrastructure of the North Eastern Region and integrating the region more closely with India's emerging gas-based economy. The milestone has been achieved with the continued support and guidance of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.

With the commissioning of the Dergaon–Dimapur Pipeline, Nagaland has been connected to the National Gas Grid for the first time, opening up opportunities for increased availability of clean and reliable natural gas for industrial, commercial and other consumers in the state.

A key significance of the development is the integration of a regional gas source from the North East with the National Gas Grid for the first time. The pipeline will facilitate the evacuation and monetisation of natural gas produced from ONGC’s Jorhat Asset, thereby improving the utilisation of domestic gas resources from the region.

The project will immediately enable the monetisation of approximately 1,10,000 SCM of natural gas per day from ONGC’s Jorhat Asset.

This is expected to reduce LNG imports by an equivalent quantity and generate an estimated economic value of around Rs 300 crore annually.

The development is expected to provide a significant boost to the gas economy of the region by enabling the conversion of locally available natural gas resources into clean energy and economic value. It will also contribute towards reducing dependence on imported LNG and strengthening India’s energy security.

The achievement assumes added significance in the context of the Government of India’s vision of “One Nation, One Gas Grid” and Vikshit Bharat 2047. By connecting the North Eastern Region to the National Gas Grid and facilitating the utilisation of indigenous gas resources, IGGL is playing a key role in advancing the country’s transition towards a cleaner and more integrated energy ecosystem.

The successful gas injection into the Dergaon–Dimapur Pipeline marks another major milestone in IGGL’s ongoing efforts to establish a gas-connected Northeast and strengthen the region’s integration with India’s national energy infrastructure.
