Away from the numbers, the conference also serves as an unofficial fashion statement-making platform for the Valley elite.

Once every year, the picturesque resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho, plays host to hundreds of corporate big wigs — think Davos in summer, where industry changing deals are made and relationships worth millions are forged.

The net worth of the attendees is mind-boggling – just do the maths with Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg and Mark Zuckerberg. But away from the numbers, the conference also serves as an unofficial fashion statement-making platform for the Valley elite. While last year, Bezos took the world by surprise with his new and improved power dressing, we couldn’t help but notice Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s choice of attire.

Since 2016, Nadella seems to have stuck to a standard uniform for the conference – a white half-sleeves T-shirt, a blue jacket (an official merchandise of the conference) and a cap. The only change is the year embroidered on the chest of the jacket. Talk about muted statements.

The late Apple co-founder fantasised about celebrating the sale of the millionth iMac by recreating the Willy Wonka golden certificate contest, author Ken Segall wrote in a book about Apple. Jobs even wanted to dress up like Willy Wonka — the top hat, velvet blazer and bow tie included. He took that fantasy to the grave since California's law required competitions to allow entry without requiring a purchase. Pity. Jobs would have looked cool in a purple suit.

Tony Fernandes

The AirAsia founder shared that it was his dream to see a book about him written. The Malaysia-based businessman said, "To hear kids saying I have inspired them. It's a nice feeling… Dreaming is good. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't dream." Looks like Fernandes took care of his fantasy himself — his autobiography was released early last month. The airline entrepreneur also said that starting a no-frills airline was also one of his dreams that became a reality and paved the way for other fantasies to be achieved.
