Business wizards get into restaurants business

As concept of eating out finds more takers with booming economy, businessmen from various sectors are rolling out restaurants. Corporate moghuls in '08

AHMEDABAD: After all the hardwork, everyone’s heading towards the eatery. People in manufacturing , services sector, advertising, consulting, they all are laying the table for those willing to splurge on a lavish course.

As the concept of eating out finds more takers with booming economy, rising salaries and increasing mobility, hardcore businessmen from across sectors are launching restaurants.

For, the new breed of promoters belonging to sectors ranging from manufacturing to services, the restaurant business is now a logical extension, looking at the growing trend of eating out.

Footwear giant Khadims’ former director and member of promoter Burman family Partha Roy Burman launched his first restaurant Nola in Kolkata in April last year. He floated Kantian food & hospitality India pvt ltd and is aiming to set up 30-35 restaurants in the next few years. The ambitious Mr Burman is also eyeing the international market and he has roped in leading agency for aggressive campaigning.

Apart from looking at the revenue models, the promoters are also trying to strike the synergy of restaurant with their existing business. Vadodarabased Rs 15,000-crore Sandesara Group that controls Sterling Biotech recently joined hands with health food delivery service provider Calorie Care and is planning to launch a number of outlets along with its new venture Sterling Health Mall.



“We are dealing with pharma and neutraceuticals so health food is a natural extension of our existing business line. Calorie Care is the first ever calorie-counted meal delivery service and it is gelling well with our newly launched Sterling health mall. We intend to set up number of outlets of the same in days to come,” Chetan Sandesara of Sandesara Group says.

Similarly, Ahmedabad-based promoter of Endeavor Careers and IIM-A graduate Vivek Tuteja formed a subsidiary Bon Temps to set up Nukkad brand of restaurants. “We are primarily targeting and catering to the students who eat out a lot. So restaurant is the first thing through which we can connect them with us.

Also, the spend on eating out is increasing rapidly and we are aiming to become one of the leading organised players in this segment,” says IIM-A graduate, promoter of Endeavor and Nukkad brands Vivek Tuteja. He is expecting the organised sector to emerge strongly in food business on the lines of retail sector in long term. Mr Tuteja is aiming to have 15 outlets of Nukkad in next three years.

Prahlad Kakkad is not the only adman to take care of appetite of people. Vadodara-based Arvind Purohit of Adert advertising agency launched a Punjabi food restaurant Anjoy after the success of his old venture catering Gujarati delicacies Amantran.
