TMC launches fresh jibe on EC in first reaction as Suvendu Adhikari becomes West Bengal CM

Soon after Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) issued its first statement, with party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee alleging large-scale electoral irregularities, partisan conduct by institutions and post-poll violence against party workers.

In a post on X, Banerjee claimed that nearly “30 lakh genuine voters” were allegedly disenfranchised from the electoral rolls during the Assembly election process. He further alleged that several government agencies and the Election Commission of India (ECI) acted in a “deeply partisan” manner, raising concerns over the “fairness, credibility and transparency” of the polls.

Banerjee also referred to allegations surrounding the handling and movement of EVMs, mismatch of control units and the counting process, claiming that these incidents had led many people to question whether the “true mandate” of voters had been respected.

“I have already demanded the release of CCTV footage from the counting centres and a transparent counting of VVPAT slips so that the truth can come before the people,” he said in the post.

The TMC leader added that democratic institutions must inspire trust among citizens, but alleged that the events surrounding the election had “deeply shaken that trust”.

His remarks come after BJP’s victory in the Assembly polls and Adhikari’s swearing-in ceremony as chief minister of the state in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders of the party.

Banerjee also alleged that several Trinamool workers and supporters had faced post-poll violence, attacks on party offices and intimidation after the election results. He claimed that some party workers had been forced to flee their homes fearing for their safety.

“No political worker in a democracy should ever have to choose between their safety and their political beliefs,” Banerjee said.

Reaffirming the party’s political stance, Banerjee said the TMC would continue to function as a “strong, vocal and uncompromising opposition” both in Delhi and West Bengal under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.

He also urged party supporters and workers facing threats or intimidation to contact him directly, promising to pursue “every available legal and democratic remedy” to ensure their safety and security.
