West Bengal Poll Results: Mamata Banerjee, 21 ministers defeated; BJP sweeps key seats
Kolkata: Around 22 of the 35 ministers from Mamata Banerjee's Cabinet, including the Chief Minister, were defeated in the 2026 assembly polls, mostly by BJP greenhorns. While Banerjee had to concede defeat to Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur, many of her ministers who had contested from TMC's core areas of Kolkata and adjoining districts were also defeated.

The rare exceptions were Trinamool ministers Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay from Ballygunge who won by a margin of 61,478 votes, Firhad Hakim from Kolkata Port, Javed Khan, Rathin Ghosh from Madhyamgram, Arup Roy from Howrah Madhya, Pulak Roy from Uluberia Dakshin, among others.

"Electors have voted for change. It is a 'no vote to Mamata'. People have given their mandate and all of them have been ousted," analyst Biswanath Chakraborty said.


All high-profile ministers of Banerjee's cabinet lost by huge margins. Mamata Banerjee, who contested from Bhabanipur was defeated by 15,105 votes. Senior minister Aroop Biswas lost from Tollygunge. Bratya Basu, who was a candidate from Dum Dum was defeated by 25, 273 votes. Another heavyweight minister, Chandrima Bhattacharya, was defeated from Dum Dum Uttar by 26,404 votes.

Another heavyweight minister, Shashi Panja, who fought from Shyampukur, was defeated by BJP's Purnima Chakraborty by 14,633 votes. Udayan Guha lost the Dinhata seat in Cooch Behar by 17,447 votes. Siddiqullah Chowdhury lost the Monteswar seat by over 14,700 votes. Pradip Majumdar lost the Durgapur Purba seat by over 30,900 votes. Sujit Bose from Bidhannagar was defeated by BJP's Tarun Jyoti Tiwari.
