Tamil Nadu poll result 2026: Vijay’s ‘Lights, Camera, Sarkar’ set to shine in Chennai, say trends
Chennai: In 2026, M K Stalin was confident of accomplishing a feat his father and Dravidian stalwart M Karunanidhi could not in his over 50 years of political career--leading DMK to successive electoral wins.

On Monday, not only did his party fail to cross the finish line, losing out to a much younger TVK, but the top DMK leader also suffered a shock defeat, the first in his decades-old political career.

As the counting of votes polled in the April 23 polls progressed across Tamil Nadu on Monday, the trends gave no chance to the DMK against an energetic and resurgent Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. In the process, Stalin's oft-repeated "Dravidian model government 2.0," the second DMK dispensation under him, remained a dream as he was confident of leading his party to a successive win.

Born in 1953, Stalin was allegedly detained under the stringent Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during Emergency and later rose through the party ranks.

After several decades of working at the grassroots level in the party, the incumbent chief minister initially transformed the DMK's youth wing into a formidable political force under his steering as its secretary.

His legislative history began in 1989 when he was elected as a member of the assembly from the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai. He was re-elected again in 1996 assembly elections from the same constituency. He emerged victorious from Thousand Lights in 2001 and 2006 as well.

Stalin was elected as Chennai Mayor (1996-2002), a post he fondly remembers for his service to the city.

In 2011, the DMK chief contested from the Kolathur constituency and was re-elected from the city segment in 2016 and won by a margin of more than 40,000 votes.

In the 2021 assembly elections, Stalin contested from Kolathur constituency again and won by a margin of more than 75,000 votes. He led his party-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) to an impressive victory, establishing the DMK rule after a 10-year hiatus.

Stalin has served as an MLA for a total of seven terms and has represented two different constituencies in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

In 2018, Stalin's father, the iconic M Karunanidhi, passed away, leaving a vacuum in the party's leadership. With his vast experience and strong leadership qualities, Stalin was unanimously elected as the president of the DMK, a position that he holds to this day.

One of Stalin's key initiatives as the DMK President has been the formation of the "Secular Progressive Alliance," which aims to bring together like-minded parties and organizations to work towards a more inclusive and equitable society. The alliance has several political parties, including Congress, and has emerged as a formidable opposition force in the state, having won all polls since the 2019 Parliamentary elections, before 2026 proved otherwise.

Seen as an effective anti-BJP face, Stalin had to face frequent clashes with the Lok Bhavan, especially when RN Ravi was the state Governor, during his stint as CM. The DMK president challenged the ruling BJP at the Centre over issues including NEET, delimitation, alleged Hindi imposition and asserted that he championed the Tamil cause.

During his latest tenure as chief minister, Stalin launched many welfare scheme such as the Rs 1000 monthly financial assistance to women, free bus travel for women, a number of initiatives to promote education and the chief minister's breakfast scheme, among others.
