Mamata Banerjee, All India Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister, is widely seen as the protagonist of the TMC party. However, Trinamool Congress in recent years have also seen the rise of another political leader - Abhishek Banerjee. Amid the Bengal election storm, Mamata’s nephew Abhishek, who is also a parliamentarian, has been campaigning at an equal pace as TMC supremo and his hoardings are gigantic enough.

Abhishek Banerjee has steadily emerged as one of the most influential strategists of TMC. He is likely the link between the party and next-generation party workers and voters. The growing prominence of his face on party posters mirrors his burgeoning stature within the party. His political campaigns draw huge crowds.

This shift towards results-oriented leadership is far from accidental. It is the professionalisation of his political identity, a move to data-driven management that is deeply rooted in his background.

Education that shaped his early career foundation

Before entering the political arena, Abhishek Banerjee moved from Kolkata’s M.P. Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School to New Delhi for professional education. In 2009, he earned his BBA and MBA in Human Resource and Marketing from the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM).

Currently, as the president of Trinamool Youth Congress (TMC), he also serves as a Member of Parliament from Diamond Harbour in the Lok Sabha.

Having evolved from being viewed mainly as a political heir to an active system-builder within the party, Abhishek’s politics draws heavily from Mamata Banerjee’s ideological framework, but with his distinct flavour. Through initiatives like ‘Banglar Yuva Shakti’ he identified, connected, and mobilised young volunteers at the local level.

Political journey

Abhishek Banerjee’s political career advanced with his election as the MP from Diamond Harbour, for the first time, in 2014. He retained the seat in 2019, and went on to secure a record-breaking victory margin of 7.1 lakh votes in 2024 Lok Sabha.

In 2021, post a party hierarchy reshuffle he was elevated to a major organisational position, second only to Mamata Banerjee.

In 2025, his appointment as leader of Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha further formalised his position in both parliamentary and party hierarchies, signalling a clear generational shift within the leadership.

For the current Assembly elections, his role has evolved into that of a coordinator of strategy as much as of a primary campaigner. The emphasis has moved away from spectacle to controlled, ground-driven political mobilisation.

At the core of his approach lies micro-level electoral planning. Instead of solely relying on large rallies, TMC’s campaigns have now tilted towards door-to-door outreach, booth-level tracking, and continuous voter engagement, according to an Economic Times report.

Through his recent campaigns, he has encouraged party members to engage every voter across the entire political spectrum and increase involvement of local leaders in taking initiatives, rather than the traditional top-down approach.

According to a Times of India report, Banerjee’s strategy is focused on targeting and outreaching thousands of key individuals and utilising multiple local organisational teams for coordination.

A notable shift has been the integration of digital communication into routine political work. He has increasingly focused on the use of digital media to communicate political narratives — instructing party workers to use social media platforms for political messaging, highlight welfare schemes with data backed communication and actively counter misinformation online, according to another TOI report.

Impact on national politics

Beyond West Bengal as well, Abhishek Banerjee’s interventions have grown sharper, particularly in opposition to the NDA government. From criticising the proposed Uniform Civil Code to the Citizenship Amendment Act, his speeches indicate an attempt to position himself within the wider national ambit. This aligns with TMC’s ambition — to extend relevance beyond the state.

The 2026 Assembly elections may serve as a decisive inflection point in defining Banerjee’s career. They could determine whether he transitions from an organisational anchor to a mass political figure in his own right — beyond the shadows of Mamata Banerjee.

Banerjee’s trajectory reflects a broader pattern in Indian regional politics, where second-generation leaders are moving from support roles to centre stage with their respective parties as well as the broader spectrum. The big question, however, remains whether he can convert organisational depth into sustained electoral resonance, and in doing so, either step into a larger leadership role or continue as the principal strategist behind it.
