Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal are gearing up for the release of one of the most-awaited films of the year, Patriot. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the film is set to hit theatres on May 1, 2026. Along with the two legends, the movie also stars Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, Darshana, and Revathi. Recently, Mammootty opened up about sharing screen space once again with his long-time friend and co-star Mohanlal.

Mammootty on working with co-star Mohanlal after 18 years

Despite the excitement surrounding their reunion after 18 years, Mammootty revealed that working with Mohanlal again felt surprisingly routine. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he shared that their first day of shooting in Colombo did not feel special or different.

The Kalamvakal actor explained that they see each other as normal people and close friends rather than stars. Their long-standing bond, along with the closeness between their families, made the collaboration feel natural and effortless.

While the film brings together two of Malayalam cinema’s biggest names, it also highlights their contrasting acting styles. Director Mahesh Narayanan had earlier described Mohanlal as a spontaneous performer. Mammootty agreed to it and said, 'He is an actor of the moment". Mammootty, on the other hand, is often seen as more methodical in his approach.

However, Mammootty was quick to add that, "Acting is deliberate. I cannot say how it’s engineered or architected. There is no science for it,” and every actor follows their own process.

Even after decades in the industry, Mammootty admitted that the pressure of performing has not faded. He revealed that he still feels nervous just before the camera starts rolling. In his words, there is always a sense of tension until the director calls “cut.” He explained that part of acting, especially in the beginning of a shot, involves managing and hiding that internal pressure.

Instead of relying on structured preparation, Mammootty said he draws from observation. By closely watching people, their behaviour, expressions, and gestures, he stores these details in his mind and uses them while performing.

More about Patriot

Patriot is not just significant for its casting but also for its grand scale. The espionage thriller has been shot across multiple international locations, including the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Thailand, and the UAE.

Speaking about casting Mammootty and Mohanlal together, director Mahesh Narayanan had earlier said that the story itself demanded the presence of both actors. Their inclusion adds weight and depth to the narrative, making it a highly anticipated project.
