Miya’ is a pejorative term used for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam whose ancestors had roots in Bangladesh. Bengali speaking Muslims are often referred as Miya Muslims. Muslims comprise 34% of the 3.12 crore population of Assam, of which 4% are indigenous Assamese Muslims and the remaining mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said, “In the last five years, we broke the legs and hands of Bangladeshi Miyas, in the next five years we will break the backbone of Miyas.”
Ajmal said, “Post election Miyas will dominate (dadagiri) in Assam. Himanta’s dominance will wane and he will go to New Delhi.”
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi will campaign for AIUDF in Assam polls. Ajmal on Friday said that Owaisi will visit Assam on April 2 and 3, during which he is scheduled to address at least eight public meetings across different constituencies.
Ajmal is contesting Binnakandi Assembly seat. Ajmal has suffered massive defeat from the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in last Lok Sabha polls.
Ajmal said, “I have been in contact with Owaisi for a long time. My son went to Delhi to formally meet him and discuss his visit to Assam, and he agreed to come on April 2 and 3. We will try to hold at least eight programmes over the two days.”
In the 2016 AIUDF won 13 seats. In 2021, the party was part of Congress led Grand Alliance and won 15 seats.
AIUDF is contesting 28 seats in the 2026 assembly polls.
