Marico’s Harsh Mariwala, maker of Parachute and Saffola, shares how a chat with a small shopkeeper gave him billion-dollar idea
Marico Chairman Harsh Mariwala revealed how a small-town retailer's feedback sparked a billion-dollar idea for his company. The suggestion to introduce smaller, more convenient pack sizes for products like Parachute and Saffola revolutionized Mari...

Mariwala shares early hustle on dusty roads
“When Marico was nascent, I had no choice,” Mariwala wrote. “I once lived at a distributor’s home in a small town.”Marico, then branching out from the family’s Bombay Oil Industries business, had no luxury budgets. Mariwala spent days visiting distributors, learning consumer behaviour first-hand.

“There were no fancy hotels… I stayed in dusty and small guest rooms. I sat with distributors over chai and samosas,” he shared.
Those visits offered a ground-level view of how products move in India’s kirana network, far from polished corporate decks.
A shopkeeper’s line that changed packaging
During one such visit, a retailer gave a blunt reality check:“You always sell big tins. When people come back to buy, they carry a few kilos. If your packet is small, they will pick your brand at convenience.”
That sentence led to a major tack shift. Marico introduced smaller SKUs, making its oils easier to buy for daily and weekly shoppers.
Learning from tea-stained counters, not fancy reports
Mariwala used the memory to send a message to founders chasing data-driven shortcuts.
“Your real research lab isn’t spreadsheets or agencies. It’s the ground… In the musty shelves of neighbourhood stores, in conversations that feel insignificant.”
Big ideas can start in small rooms
His takeaway is clear: innovation can come from dusty shop counters, tiny tea stalls, and conversations that don’t look important at first glance. For Marico, that small-retailer insight became a multi-crore strategy, proving that sometimes the brightest ideas start in the humblest corners of India. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
