If you thought fresh breath was all about fancy mouthwashes and mints, Deepika Padukone’s trainer Yasmin Karachiwala has a far more natural fix—and it comes straight from Ayurveda. In her latest Instagram post, the celebrity fitness expert revealed her go-to morning ritual that promises toxin-free freshness, healthier gums, and a brighter smile. And all it takes is a tablespoon of coconut oil and five quiet minutes of your morning.

Yasmin calls it oil pulling, an age-old detox practice. She recommends taking one tablespoon of coconut oil and swishing it around your mouth for about five to ten minutes. While it might feel strange at first, Yasmin assures that you’ll get used to it quickly—and the benefits make it more than worth it.

According to her, this simple routine helps draw out toxins, bacteria, and impurities from the mouth, keeping it clean and naturally fresh. Once done, she advises not to swallow the oil but to spit it out and rinse with warm water to remove any leftover residue.

She admits it may look a little funny, but the results speak for themselves—healthier gums, fresher breath, and that confident smile to start your day right. As Yasmin sums it up, this tiny morning habit can do wonders for oral hygiene and overall wellness.

What does science say?

According to Healthline, Streptococcus mutans is one of the main bacteria responsible for plaque buildup and tooth decay. A 2016 study cited by the publication found that adults who practised oil pulling with coconut oil for 10 minutes daily saw a significant reduction in S. mutans levels within just two weeks, compared to those using distilled water. It further noted that gingivitis, caused by inflammation of the gums, can improve with oil pulling. A 2020 study found that virgin coconut oil helped reduce plaque buildup.
