Bubble or Revolution? IMF's Krishna Srinivasan on what AI means for Indian jobs
Will AI take your job? Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, says the answer is more nuanced than the headlines. The IMF studied job postings across 19 Asian countries since ChatGPT's launch. In sectors exposed to AI, labour demand fell by about 10% and then stabilised, while demand for workers with AI skills is rising. "If you embrace AI as a worker… there will be a market for you," he says. But the risks are real. Basic coding jobs are likely to be lost. A correction in the AI boom could hit Asia hardest. And India's large farm workforce, shielded from AI today, could find that shield becomes a trap tomorrow.
