At least 12 people were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee on Saturday night (Oct. 24), hours after a homecoming football game, according to the police. Preliminary findings suggested that an altercation involving two or three persons had taken place before the shooting, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said in a late-night news conference Saturday. Those injured included 11 who suffered gunshot wounds. Here's what we know about the victims so far.

Victims include six juveniles

Of the 12 injured individuals, six were minors (under the age of 18). Three of the victims were in serious condition, including one in critical condition, while eight were stable, the police said. The youngest victim was just 11 years old.

One victim was a student at Florida A&M, the police chief Revell said. Besides those shot, a victim's grandmother was injured while fleeing the scene amid panic caused by the shooting.

In an update issued Sunday morning, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) said that six of the victims remained in hospital, with one in critical condition.

Five other victims had been discharged from the hospital, the department said. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday morning, according to ABC News.

When did the shooting occur?

Authorities responded to the shooting near the university's Bragg Memorial Stadium just before 8 pm, the police said. Shortly before the incident, the Florida A&M University’s football team had faced the team of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff at that stadium.

The Florida A&M Rattlers lost the game 28-31. It remained unclear whether the shooting was linked to the game in any way.

Revell said the police department's Violent Crimes Unit would lead the investigation. "As our detectives work to determine exactly what happened and identify those responsible, we remain committed to getting answers for these families," he said, according to CNN.

The Florida A&M University is one of the largest historically Black colleges in the US, with about 10,000 enrolled students. Its weeklong homecoming celebration is among the biggest events on the university's calendar, attended by students, faculty, and alumni. The celebrations were scheduled to conclude Sunday (Oct. 25).

'Heartbreaking tragedy'

Florida A&M issued a statement late on Saturday, saying: "Our hearts go out to the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident. While the campus remains safe, individuals are encouraged to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to conduct its investigation."

In a post on X, Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey described the shooting as a "truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy." He added: "Tonight and in the days ahead, the FAMU family is not alone. Our entire community stands with you."
