EPF retirement corpus calculator: Rs 1,800 vs Rs 3,000 monthly contribution
The EPF wage ceiling is being considered at Rs 25,000, up from Rs 15,000. Under the old ceiling, 12% of Rs 15,000 means an EPF contribution of Rs 1,800 a month. At the Rs 25,000 ceiling, the contribution rises to Rs 3,000 a month. A higher contribution over a long service period can significantly increase the retirement corpus. But how much difference could it make over 30 years?

EPF vs EPS: Why the employer contribution matters
For employees who are members of both EPF and EPS, the employer's contribution is divided between the two: 3.67% of basic pay goes to EPF and 8.33% goes towards EPS. However, employees who are not members of EPS receive the entire employer EPF contribution in their EPF account.

Employees with basic pay above Rs 15,000 who joined service on or after September 1, 2014, could not join EPS. For such employees, the employer's EPF contribution would increase from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,000 a month under the Rs 25,000 wage ceiling.

EPF contribution of Rs 1,800/month: Check 30-year corpus
Assuming that the employee and employer each would contribute Rs 1,800 per month to EPF, with no EPS contribution, and the EPF interest rate remaining at 8.25% for 30 years:
● Total contribution (employee + employer): Rs 12.96 lakh
● Interest earned: Rs 42.50 lakh
● EPF corpus after 30 years: Rs 55.47 lakh (approximately)

EPF contribution of Rs 3,000/month: Check 30-year corpus
Under the Rs 25,000 wage ceiling, the employee and employer contributions would increase to Rs 3,000 each per month. At an assumed 8.25% EPF interest rate for 30 years:
● Total contribution: Rs 21.60 lakh
● Interest earned: Rs 70.85 lakh
● EPF corpus after 30 years: Rs 92.45 lakh (approximately)

Rs 3,000 vs Rs 1,800 EPF contribution: Check the corpus difference
The estimated corpus would increase from Rs 55.47 lakh to Rs 92.45 lakh. That is a difference of: Rs 92.45 lakh - Rs 55.47 lakh = Rs 36.98 lakh. Therefore, under these assumptions, the Rs 3,000 monthly contribution could create an approximately Rs 37 lakh higher corpus over 30 years.

EPF corpus comparison: Rs 1,800 vs Rs 3,000
The table compares the monthly contribution, total contribution, interest earned and estimated corpus under both scenarios. The calculation is illustrative and assumes a fixed 8.25% EPF interest rate and fixed monthly contributions for 30 years. Actual EPF returns may vary because the interest rate is declared for each financial year.
