Google to release 64 million bacteria-riddled mosquitoes across California and Florida
Global tech giant Google has sought permission to release 64 million bacteria-infected mosquitoes in California and Florida. While the proposal may sound surprising, it has not sparked significant concern. The initiative is part of Google's Debug program, which plans to release the mosquitoes across both states over a two-year period. The permit, however, has not yet been approved by the agency.

The company has filed an application with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for an experimental use permit to deploy Wolbachia‑treated male Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, up to 16 million per state, per year, according to the online platform Gadget Review.

What is Google’s Debug initiative



The Debug initiative aims to release millions of non‑biting male mosquitoes infected with a bacterium called Wolbachia pipientis, commonly known as Wolbachia. While the bacterium does not harm infected males, it prevents uninfected females that mate with them from producing offspring, thereby reducing mosquito populations over time.

Specifically, Google is seeking to target southern house mosquitoes (Culex quinquefasciatus), an invasive species native to tropical and subtropical regions. These mosquitoes are known to transmit diseases such as West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis in humans.

Speaking on the proposal, Karthikeyan Chandrasegaran, an assistant professor at the University of California, Riverside, who studies the ecology and behavior of mosquitoes in the context of public health, told Live Science that using Wolbachia is a “reasonable” mosquito control approach, particularly when compared to the use of broad insecticides.

“Wolbachia‑based strategies are generally species‑specific and do not introduce novel toxins into the environment,” Chandrasegaran said. “Importantly, Wolbachia is already widespread in many insect species and is a naturally occurring bacterial symbiont rather than a genetically engineered organism. From that perspective, they are among the more environmentally conservative mosquito control tools currently available.”

The EPA has deemed Google’s request to be of potential regional and national significance and will make a final decision on whether to grant the permit. A public comment period ended on June 5, and the agency is expected to decide on allowing the release of up to 32 million mosquitoes in California and another 32 million in Florida over two years.
