According to authorities, as reported by New York Post, the man climbed the Manhattan-side north tower of the Brooklyn Bridge at around 2:30 PM, where he reportedly attached several flags before removing his clothes. Witnesses watched as he remained atop the structure before making a dramatic jump into the East River.
Videos shared online appear to show the man holding what looked like a piece of clothing or a bag above his head as he descended toward the water.
Officers from the NYPD Harbor Unit quickly responded to the scene, pulled the man from the river, and brought him safely to shore. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where officials said he was in stable condition.
According to police sources, as reported by the outlet, one of the flags displayed on the bridge appeared to be the national flag of Kazakhstan, while another was a blanket or fabric banner bearing handwritten text. The message on the material was not immediately legible, and investigators have not determined its significance.
The dramatic episode comes just weeks after another high-profile rescue on the Brooklyn Bridge, when NYPD officers safely brought a distressed woman down from the bridge's steel cables, preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.
