According to NOAA Fisheries, teams working on the Kenai Peninsula have spent the past few construction seasons rebuilding the creek's channel from the start. The core of the work is surprisingly simple: instead of relying on concrete or steel, crews install more than 1,000 whole trees to build logjams. These structures slow the current, carve out deep pools, and spread the water as it naturally flowed before hydraulic mining ruined the streambed. The initiative is restoring 2.2 miles of stream and 74 acres of floodplain habitat. This allows salmon to reach spawning grounds they lost more than a century ago.
For anyone who wonders whether environmental restoration is merely symbolic, this project shows measurable ecological change is possible.
Why does a stream need trees to function
At first glance, the premise sounds counterintuitive: isn't a fast-moving creek considered a healthy environment? Historic hydraulic mining stripped Resurrection Creek down to a fast-moving channel lined with gravel tailings.
NOAA Fisheries describes the water as roaring 'like a freight train' through this artificially straightened channel. Chinook, coho, pink, chum, and sockeye salmon all require complex, varied water structures to spawn and mature, features this creek lacked.

The restoration project that had stalled for years
Restoration on Resurrection Creek is not new. The U.S. Forest Service restored one mile of the creek during Phase I in the mid-2000s, according to NOAA Fisheries. NOAA describes Phase I as the beginning of a restoration effort that started 20 years ago. That early work triggered an immediate sixfold increase in adult Chinook salmon, with long-term monitoring between 2005 and 2015 showing even larger gains for other species, including a 1,025% increase in chum salmon and a 1,550% increase in adult pink salmon.
Funding for a second larger phase stopped for more than a decade. The project resumed after Trout Unlimited and Kinross Gold Corporation began organizing joint fishing trips for military veterans. That relationship grew into the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative. By 2022, the U.S. Forest Service reports that Trout Unlimited, Kinross, Hope Mining Company, the National Forest Foundation, NOAA, and the Forest Service had all come together to fund construction on Resurrection Creek. Kinross gave $540,000 for work in the stream. NOAA’s Office of Habitat Conservation gave a $3.9 million award through the National Forest Foundation, and the U.S. Forest Service added $2.2 million more. Even Hope Mining Company, which still has claims near the creek, agreed to maintain a 200- to 500-foot-wide buffer in its own activities so the restoration could take place.

Even if you never visit the Kenai Peninsula, the project still matters. Resurrection Creek sits just 1.5 miles upstream of the town of Hope, and rebuilding the floodplain reduces flood risk to homes and businesses there during heavy storms. Out of the total $7 million to $12.5 million raised by the coalition across all funding sources and years for overall engineering, heavy machinery, and multi-year construction, millions have flowed directly into the local economy by hiring heavy equipment operators, construction crews, and youth conservation teams.
There is also a benefit to the food chain. Salmon returning to Resurrection Creek enter Cook Inlet, home to the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale. NOAA has flagged insufficient prey as one of the biggest obstacles to that whale population’s recovery, so more salmon in the system is not just good news for anglers. It is also an important factor in that species’ survival.
A model other rivers might actually copy
What makes this project notable beyond the local area is the partnership behind it. Joint funding for habitat restoration by a mining company and a conservation nonprofit is unusual, and Trout Unlimited’s Austin Williams said the group hopes to replicate the model at other abandoned mining sites across Alaska.
Every stream has its own history and stakeholders. But Resurrection Creek shows that when funding, science, and a willingness to compromise line up, a river nearly wrecked by hydraulic mining can start supporting salmon again within a few construction seasons rather than a few generations.
