A pest that hitched a ride and never left
The spotted lanternfly first turned up in Pennsylvania in 2014, likely arriving in a shipment from Asia. According to USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the insect has since spread to 19 states and Washington, DC, feeding on grapevines, hops, and hardwood trees. It also excretes a sticky substance called honeydew that promotes mold growth, which is part of why some states have run public campaigns urging people to squash it on sight.
Why the eggs are the real problem
Adults are fairly easy to spot. Their eggs are not. USDA APHIS notes that each newly laid egg mass holds 30 to 50 eggs and looks like a smear of wet gray putty that later dries into something resembling cracked mud. Females glue these onto tree bark, patio furniture, and even car bumpers, which is exactly how the pest keeps jumping into new states. Catching an egg mass before it hatches is one of the most effective ways to stop it from spreading further.

Trained detection dogs can already do this job well. According to Virginia Tech's research team, though, there simply aren't enough professional dogs to keep pace with how fast the pest is spreading. So the researchers, led by Ph.D. student Sally Dickinson, asked a different question: could everyday pet owners, many of whom already do recreational scent-detection as a hobby, train their own dogs to help instead? The project therefore focused on participatory science, using ordinary owners and hobby scent-work teams instead of recruiting specialized handlers.
Building an army of citizen-scientist dogs
Virginia Tech states that more than 1,000 dog owners across the country volunteered for the project, and over 40 percent already had some background in recreational scent detection. Researchers narrowed that pool down to 182 dog-handler teams, who trained at home for several months using egg masses that had been deactivated so they couldn't hatch or spread on their own.
How the dogs were tested
Each team then went through two rounds of evaluation. According to the PeerJ study titled ‘Evaluating the effectiveness of participatory science dog teams to detect devitalized Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) egg masses,’ the first was an indoor odor recognition test, where a dog had to pick out the box containing lanternfly eggs from several decoy boxes. Teams that passed moved on to an outdoor field test, where the same scent had to compete with grass, dirt, and every other smell a backyard has to offer.
The numbers that make this a big deal
According to Virginia Tech's summary of the findings, dogs correctly identified egg masses 82 percent of the time indoors. Outdoors, accuracy dropped to 61 percent, which is still better than many human searches in the same conditions. The standout number comes from the teams that cleared both stages. Once those dogs moved on to hunting for real, live egg masses, they succeeded 92 percent of the time, often needing only a little extra training to make the switch.

You don't need a working breed or years of formal training for this. Fox News' coverage of participants in the study notes that some of the more effective teams included ordinary mixed-breed pets, like a nine-year-old pit bull mix named Finch, guided by owners who simply enjoyed scent games on weekends. That's the real takeaway for pet owners: the instinct your dog already has for sniffing every inch of the sidewalk might genuinely be useful.
The bigger picture for US agriculture
Invasive species management has always struggled with scale. There aren't enough inspectors, and there definitely aren't enough professional detection dogs, to check every vineyard and backyard across 19 states. What this study points to is a low-cost, community-driven backup plan: regular people and their dogs working alongside professionals to catch this pest before it spreads any further. It's not a replacement for trained science, but it's a genuinely useful new tool in the fight.
