In the 1930s, people likely believed you could fix a swamp with a tree. Florida was pushing to turn the Everglades into usable land, and a fast-growing Australian tree called melaleuca seemed like the answer. According to a peer-reviewed study in the journal Castanea, a Florida man named Hully Sterling flew a plane over what is now Broward and Miami-Dade counties in 1936, scattering melaleuca seeds straight into the wetlands below him. It seemed like a smart fix. It became one of the most damaging plant invasions in US history.

A tree with a job to do
The tree at the center of this story is melaleuca, also called the paperbark or punk tree. It came from Australia, where it grows in wetlands without causing much trouble. According to the same Castanea study titled ‘Invasion History of Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S.T. Blake in Florida,’ the earliest confirmed introduction of melaleuca into Florida happened in 1886, in Sarasota County, and growers used it for landscaping and windbreaks in the decades that followed. People noticed something useful about it fast: this tree drinks a lot of water.

That gave land developers an idea. Plant enough melaleuca in a swamp, and it pulls water out of the ground. Dry land is land you can sell or farm. In the 1930s, the US Army Corps of Engineers planted melaleuca to help anchor levees around Lake Okeechobee, according to the US Department of Agriculture species profile. Private growers took the idea further, flying over the Everglades and dropping seed straight onto the marsh. It didn't take much: a single tree can produce roughly 20 million seeds a year, the University of Florida plant directory entry notes.

How a good idea went very wrong
At first, melaleuca looked like a win. It grew fast, tolerated both dry and flooded soil, and formed tall, tidy stands. But nobody planned for what happens when you drop a tough outsider into a place with no natural predators to keep it in check.

Melaleuca did not just dry a few acres near the coast. It spread across the entire Everglades system. The tree forms such dense, closely packed groves that almost no sunlight reaches the ground beneath it. Native plants that depend on that light disappear, and so do the animals that depend on those plants for food and shelter. The UF/IFAS guide notes melaleuca made habitat unsuitable for species such as the Florida panther and the wood stork.

By 1994, melaleuca had infested almost 500,000 acres of South Florida, according to the UF/IFAS guide. Decades of cleanup work have cut back the densest groves since then, but the tree has not gone away. It still covers more than 400,000 acres of Florida wetland today, according tothe US Department of Agriculture species profile, which also estimates the wetland services lost to melaleuca invasion at close to $14,800 per hectare every year.

Why this matters even if you have never been to Florida
You might picture the Everglades as a swamp on a postcard. It is one of the most ecologically significant ecosystems in the United States, and melaleuca puts a large piece of it at risk. Beyond crowding out native plants, the tree carries natural oils in its leaves and bark, which are great for the tree and bad for fire safety. According to the same USDA profile, melaleuca infestations degrade native wildlife habitat and waterways across South Florida.

The cleanup nobody signed up for
Florida and the federal government have spent decades and real money fighting a plant that people planted on purpose. The UF/IFAS guide states that Florida agencies spent more than $30 million over 20 years controlling melaleuca, using a mix of herbicides, mechanical clearing, and insects imported from Australia that feed only on this tree. The melaleuca weevil was released in 1997, followed by the melaleuca psyllid in 2002 and a stem-gall midge in 2008. None of these insects kill a mature tree outright, but together they cut seed production and slow the growth of new seedlings.

Full removal from an area the size of a small US state was never realistic. The goal today, per the same guide, is keeping melaleuca from rebuilding the dense forests it once formed, not erasing it completely.

The lesson for the rest of us
This story is not really about one tree. It is about how easily a fix can turn into a disaster when nobody asks what happens next. The growers who scattered melaleuca seeds from airplanes were trying to improve the Everglades, not hurt it. They thought they were improving it. Nearly a century later, Florida is still facing consequences for that decision.

The next time your feed shows an airboat gliding through sawgrass, remember that the landscape might have looked very different. A vast, one-of-a-kind wetland was nearly replaced by a single imported tree, dropped from the sky with good intentions and zero foresight.
