A disappearance that made no sense
According to the NBC News report, the man, later identified in Swedish media as Peter Skyllberg, went missing on December 19, 2011, near the city of Umeå in northern Sweden. He wasn't lost in some remote wilderness. His car was parked off a quiet forest track not far from a main road. Once heavy snow started falling that winter, it kept falling until the car was buried under roughly a meter of it. With no footprints and no sign of movement, search efforts never gained any real traction, and authorities eventually lost track of him entirely.

The report by IFL Science on how he was found states that two snowmobilers came across the car on February 17, 2012, and at first assumed it was just a wreck someone had left behind. Something made them stop anyway. They cleared snow off a window and saw movement inside. The man was lying in the back seat, wrapped in a sleeping bag, barely able to speak. Rescuers found a bottle of soda, some cigarettes, and comic books in the car, but nothing that could have realistically fed a person for close to two months. According to the NBC News report, doctors said he had likely survived on small amounts of melted snow for water, going almost entirely without solid food the whole time.
The "igloo effect" probably kept him from freezing
The obvious question is how someone survives weeks of brutal cold with barely any shelter over his head. The IFL Science report quoting Dr. Ulf Segerberg, the hospital's chief medical officer at the time, notes that the snow that buried the car may have worked in the man's favor rather than against him, insulating the vehicle somewhat like an igloo insulates the people inside it. Snow is a surprisingly good insulator because it is packed with tiny trapped air pockets that slow down heat loss.
According to a study, ‘Thermal benefit of igloos in extremely cold conditions in Harbin, China,’ published in Building and Environment, snow shelters can trap body heat well enough to maintain internal temperatures many degrees above the freezing air outside, even without any outside heat source at all. In the study, the team built snow shelters under outdoor temperatures of roughly -30°C and monitored how well they buffered the interior from the ambient cold. They found the igloo-like structure could keep the inside many degrees warmer than outside air, showing just how effective compacted snow alone can be as an insulator.
In this case, the snow that sealed the car may have acted like a shell, cutting the worst of the wind and cold while his own body heat did the rest.

Even with that insulation, his condition was serious. The IFL Science report notes that doctors recorded his body temperature at around 31°C, several degrees below the normal 37°C, and low enough to count as hypothermia. According to a clinical review of accidental hypothermia published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the human body responds to prolonged cold exposure by slowing its metabolism and prioritizing blood flow to vital organs, a survival response that helps explain why some people endure conditions that look impossible to survive. Combined with very limited movement and almost no food intake, his body appears to have shifted into an extreme energy-conservation mode over those two months, letting him hang on far longer than most of us would expect.
A story that still raises questions
Cases like this don't come with neat, complete explanations, and the doctors involved at the time were upfront about that. What is clear is that this case sits close to the outer edge of what's medically documented for surviving without food, and it lines up with what research on starvation and hypothermia says is, in rare and specific circumstances, biologically possible. According to an NBC News report, Skyllberg was treated at the hospital in Umeå and, based on available reporting, recovered from the ordeal.
