Most of us learn one basic rule about bears: give them space, or risk serious consequences. In 1986, wildlife biologist Lynn Rogers walked into the woods of northeastern Minnesota with the intention of breaking this rule. He didn't carry any form of protection, just patience, and in the years that followed, he was able to take long walks with wild black bears.

According to the peer-reviewed study "How to Obtain Behavioral and Ecological Data from Free-Ranging, Researcher-Habituated Black Bears," published by Rogers and fellow researcher Gregory Wilker through the International Association for Bear Research and Management, the project ran from 1986 to 1989 with one specific goal: to figure out whether wild black bears could be habituated closely enough to observers that scientists could document their natural behavior up close, without cages, tranquilizer darts, or fences.

Why this mattered for young Americans who fear the outdoors
For readers raised on bear-attack warnings at trailheads, this study offers a different perspective. That does not mean bears are harmless in every situation. How the trust actually got built
Rogers didn't walk up to wild bears and expect cooperation. The process was slow and methodical. Researchers first identified bears that repeatedly visited a controlled feeding site where humans were present. Out of 26 bears that visited the site, three 2-year-old females were selected and radio-collared for further habituation work away from the site.

From there, the team located the bears, fed them, and followed them across their territories. According to the same research, each bear needed roughly 50 to 100 hours of sustained contact before it accepted the researchers' presence and largely ignored observers following just 3 to 30 feet behind. It was not a single walk into the woods. It took hundreds of hours of exposure before the bears stopped treating humans as threats.

A method borrowed from chimpanzee research
Rogers has often credited primatologist Jane Goodall's fieldwork with chimpanzees as an influence on his approach, a connection reflected in his own published bibliography through the Wildlife Research Institute, the organization he founded near Ely, Minnesota. Goodall built trust with wild chimps over years, allowing the animals to set the pace. Rogers brought similar patience to black bears, a species with a very different reputation in American culture.

Rogers is described as having followed over 300 bears in northeastern Minnesota, in some cases for as long as 23 years, and the institute says his work combined Jane Goodall’s trust-based field methods with telemetry, GPS, field computers and webcams. The result was a broad program covering behavior, ecology, hibernation, vocalizations, body language, social organization and bear-human relations.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Rogers has followed the lives of more than 300 individual black bears in the region, according to the Institute's biography of his work. His 1987 population study on food supply and social behavior in Minnesota black bears remains one of the most cited papers in bear biology.

The debate this research still stirs up
The research drew controversy. In 2013, Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources declined to renew Rogers' research permit, citing concern that habituated bears might later approach other people expecting food. Wildlife research often involves a trade-off: the closer scientists get, the more an animal's wariness of humans can erode. Rogers and his supporters pushed back, pointing to decades of data showing no bear in the feeding program had turned dangerous to the public.

In North America, fatal attacks by black bears on humans continue to be extremely uncommon relative to the vast number of meetings between bears and people that take place in national parks and forests each year. This does not mean black bears are pets or that habituation is something every hiker should attempt. Rogers' research suggests that black bears are often more wary of people than many people assume.

When you see a trail marker warning that you are entering bear country, remember the biologist who entered without a weapon in 1986. He did not force his way through nature; instead, he waited patiently enough to earn the bears' trust.
