Long before GPS collars and drone surveys, one biologist's field notes filled the gap. In its early years, Mount McKinley National Park had little formal wildlife data, the National Park Service notes. There were no population counts, migration records, or clear understanding of how its caribou, sheep, and wolves lived alongside one another. Olaus J. Murie was the biologist who set out to close that gap.

Olaus Murie was a biologist working for the U.S. Biological Survey. In the summer of 1922, he arrived at the park hoping to capture bull caribou for study, park records show. That trip was part of a broader Alaska caribou study he conducted for the U.S. Biological Survey from 1920 to 1926, mapping migratory routes and estimating populations, according to the National Park Service's biography of Olaus Murie. That early caribou fieldwork became part of the broader record the park later drew on when it examined predator-prey dynamics.

Who was Olaus Murie, and why did he go to Alaska


Olaus Murie was a field biologist, not a visitor. His 1922 caribou expedition would shape decades of research to come. Wildlife research at the park expanded after Olaus Murie arrived to study caribou, according to the National Park Service's history of science at Denali. Between them, the brothers spent more than five decades studying the park's animals, including caribou and wolves.

What did Olaus Murie learn about caribou?

The early caribou work was detailed. It meant tracking herd movements, monitoring calf survival, and understanding how caribou interacted with nearby reindeer herds. That groundwork gave the park a wildlife baseline that rangers and scientists could build on. Olaus Murie's caribou research proved useful as the park entered a broader policy debate.

How a fight over wolves led to science

Many people, including rangers in the park, called for the killing of wolves and coyotes to protect the Dall sheep. For a while, this was what the park officials were doing. Washington officials protested against this and made efforts to put a stop to the killing of predators, but due to popular demand, they gave in within a year, and the killing of wolves resumed until the late 1930s. Olaus Murie's caribou research and the debate it fed into were still part of the wider picture, and his findings on predator-prey balance were now relevant to the wolf question too.

It was this unresolved debate that led the park, in 1939, to bring in Olaus's younger brother, Adolph Murie, to study the problem rather than respond to it with further killing. For two years, he observed wolves, sheep, and other wildlife closely and, based on that, published his book The Wolves of Mount McKinley in 1944.

How the Murie brothers changed wildlife management

Adolph Murie continued to visit the park annually until 1970. He observed the grizzly bears, wolverines, and other smaller animals as well. This was an important period in the history of the National Park Service, as it began a shift from predator extermination to managing the entire park as a whole ecosystem, an approach that traced directly back to the kind of ecological baseline Olaus had started building decades earlier.

The research performed by the Murie brothers, starting with Olaus's early caribou counts, assisted the officials in decision-making. They had facts at hand instead of assumptions. Adolph Murie was also a proponent of maintaining the park's natural state. He did not want much construction in the park, such as a hotel on the banks of the Savage River. He thought that the construction of roads and signs would destroy the park. The ideas expressed by Adolph Murie helped officials determine the future course of action regarding the Denali Park Road construction. They built only those facilities that were deemed necessary.

In 1965, Adolph Murie received the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of the Interior, a significant honor. According to the National Park Service, Adolph Murie continued visiting the park with his family until his death in 1974, always returning to the place he loved most.

Why this still matters today

Modern wolf-management debates, from Yellowstone to Denali, trace back to the ecological groundwork the Murie brothers laid in Alaska, starting with Olaus's caribou fieldwork and carried forward by Adolph's wolf research. It took two brothers, many summers in Alaska, and many notes to establish this concept.
