The USS Nimitz, the first ship of America’s iconic Nimitz-class nuclear supercarriers, is heading toward the end of an era. After more than 50 years of service, the warship that shaped US naval power through the Cold War, Middle East conflicts and Indo-Pacific rivalries is reportedly preparing for deactivation. According to a report by 19FortyFive, the US Navy plans to deactivate USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in March 2027 after a final period focused on training and preparation rather than frontline combat operations.

The retirement timeline comes at a strategically sensitive moment for Washington, with the US Navy facing growing demands across the Indo-Pacific, Middle East and other contested regions. The departure of one of its oldest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers highlights the challenge of maintaining a global carrier presence while transitioning toward the newer Ford-class carriers.

USS Nimitz: The supercarrier that defined American naval power



Commissioned on May 3, 1975, USS Nimitz became the lead ship of a class that transformed the US Navy’s approach to global power projection. Named after Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the commander of US naval forces in the Pacific during World War II, the carrier represented a new generation of nuclear-powered warships designed to remain at sea for extended periods without requiring conventional fuel.

The carrier is approximately 1,092 feet (333 metres) long, displaces around 97,000 tonnes at full load, and can operate more than 60 aircraft, depending on mission requirements.

Unlike earlier conventional carriers that depended heavily on fuel logistics, USS Nimitz uses nuclear propulsion, allowing it to operate for decades with reactor refuelling rather than frequent fuel stops.

The Nimitz-class became the backbone of US carrier aviation, with 10 carriers built between 1968 and 2009, before the Navy shifted toward the next-generation Gerald R. Ford class.

From Iran hostage crisis to modern wars


USS Nimitz entered global headlines only a few years after commissioning. During the Iran hostage crisis of 1979–1981, the carrier was deployed to the Indian Ocean as part of America’s response after Iranian militants seized the US embassy in Tehran.

In April 1980, aircraft operating from Nimitz supported Operation Eagle Claw, the failed US attempt to rescue American hostages held in Iran. The mission ended after a helicopter accident in the Iranian desert, killing eight US service members.

The carrier later played a role in Cold War-era operations, including the 1981 Gulf of Sidra confrontation, when US Navy F-14 Tomcats from USS Nimitz shot down two Libyan Su-22 fighter aircraft.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, many expected the strategic importance of aircraft carriers to decline. Instead, USS Nimitz remained central to American military operations.

In 2014, the carrier became part of aviation history when an F-35C Lightning II conducted its first arrested landing aboard USS Nimitz during testing off California.

Why the US Navy is retiring one of its most famous carriers


The retirement of USS Nimitz is largely linked to age, maintenance costs and fleet modernisation. Nuclear aircraft carriers are designed for extremely long service lives, but maintaining a ship after five decades becomes increasingly expensive and complex.

Older carriers require extensive maintenance periods, replacement of ageing components, specialised industrial support and upgrades to aviation and combat systems

The US Navy is also transitioning toward the Gerald R. Ford-class carriers, which feature newer technology, including electromagnetic aircraft launch systems and advanced arresting gear.

What replaces USS Nimitz? US nuclear carrier fleet entering a new era


The US Navy currently operates 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, including:

  • USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) – Gerald R. Ford-class
  • USS Nimitz (CVN-68) – Nimitz-class, scheduled for deactivation
  • USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69)
  • USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70)
  • USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)
  • USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)
  • USS George Washington (CVN-73)
  • USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74)
  • USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75)
  • USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76)
  • USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77)
As Nimitz leaves service, the Navy is shifting towards the newer Gerald R. Ford-class carriers. These ships feature advanced systems such as electromagnetic aircraft launch systems (EMALS) and improved arresting gear designed to increase aircraft operations.

Future Ford-class carriers include USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), currently progressing toward fleet entry, USS Enterprise (CVN-80), under construction, and USS Doris Miller (CVN-81), planned as the next ship in the class.

However, the transition carries challenges. Ford-class carriers have faced construction delays, technical issues and rising costs, meaning the Navy must carefully manage retirements while maintaining its requirement for 11 carriers.

A difficult moment for US naval power


The retirement timeline for USS Nimitz comes at a particularly demanding moment for the US Navy, which is balancing commitments in the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific and Europe. The ongoing Iran conflict has placed additional pressure on American military resources, including naval aviation, missile defence and carrier strike group deployments.

Recent US-Iran fighting has involved missile exchanges, strikes against Iranian military infrastructure and attacks involving Iran-backed forces across the region. On July 30, 2026, the US military carried out a new wave of strikes against Iranian targets after Tehran launched ballistic missiles at US forces in the region, according to reports.

The conflict has increased pressure on Washington’s ability to sustain military operations across multiple theatres. The Middle East remains one of the most demanding regions for US naval forces because of the need to protect shipping routes, support air operations and counter Iran’s missile and drone capabilities.

At the same time, the US Navy must maintain readiness in the Indo-Pacific, where China’s expanding naval capabilities have become Washington’s primary long-term maritime challenge.

USS Nimitz’s final chapter


According to 19FortyFive’s report, the carrier’s remaining period will focus on training activities and preparations for deactivation rather than another major combat deployment.

The process of retiring a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is complex. It involves:

  • removing weapons and sensitive equipment
  • shutting down systems
  • defuelling nuclear reactors
  • preparing the vessel for dismantling
Unlike conventional ships, nuclear-powered carriers require specialised procedures because of their reactors and radioactive materials. The retirement process can take years and involves significant costs even after a ship leaves active service.
