In a landscape of glacial ice, fire may seem like a remote concern. But the reality at research stations is different. Fire is one of the most immediate and lethal hazards to human survival in Antarctica.

To mitigate this risk, the National Science Foundation designates McMurdo Station as the U.S. Antarctic Program's central logistics hub and home to the Antarctic Fire Department. As documented by the National Science Foundation, which funds and manages U.S. activities on the continent, maintaining specialized emergency-protection infrastructure is essential for safe, full-scale operations at remote hubs such as McMurdo Station.

To understand why Antarctica needs firefighters around the clock, it helps to look at the climate, combustion, and life in isolation.


The polar climate paradox

Antarctica is classified as a polar desert due to its very low annual rainfall. Low relative humidity makes the air dry and draws moisture from surrounding materials. In heated research stations and modules, wooden frames, insulation, supplies, and electronics can dry out and become more flammable.

Any fire that breaks out in such conditions can be quickly intensified by local climatic conditions. Katabatic winds blowing down from the plateau produce strong surface gusts. Such winds can feed a small flame with oxygen and rapidly increase heat inside structures.

Losing a building or power system is especially dangerous in a polar environment. In a temperate area, people can usually find shelter nearby. At Antarctic stations, facilities act as a climate-controlled life-support system in subzero temperatures. Losing housing or power generation can put people at risk of hypothermia.

The USAP reports that fires at stations in previous years across different Antarctic programs have led to complete structural failure and disruption of life support.

Inside Antarctica’s only professional fire department

To safeguard its main logistics, aviation and research hub, the Antarctic Fire Department is based at McMurdo Station on Ross Island. Unlike staff at many other Antarctic stations, the McMurdo team is made up of professional firefighters. McMurdo Station's population swells during the austral summer season, with the NSF reporting that the base can house up to 1,100 people in a single week as scientists, contractors and military flight crews arrive for deep-field science work.

Suppressing fire in extreme cold

Extreme cold turns ordinary firefighting into an engineering challenge. Maintaining water in a liquid state inside fire hoses becomes difficult once temperatures drop below freezing point. Such freezing conditions can also affect mechanical joints, hydraulics, and firefighters' protective gear.

To get around this, the Antarctic Fire Department keeps water moving continuously through its lines and blends in a low-freezing-point foam additive made specifically for polar conditions. Underground hydrant lines are insulated and heat-traced, and hydrants are kept covered when not in use. Fire trucks are also modified for the terrain, with track systems that help them move through snow and ice. Field safety regulations in the United States Antarctic Program Continental Field Manual call for this kind of polar-adapted equipment across the program.

Protecting polar research facilities

Safe operations at Antarctic facilities depend on strict fire-mitigation procedures. Managing fire risk at the station's power plant, fuel storage tanks, and other critical infrastructure is a core part of daily base operations, with an officer assigned to oversee fire prevention practices, compliance, and education, and each USAP structure inspected at least once a month by on-duty crews.

Through its emergency response teams at McMurdo Station, the United States Antarctic Program helps keep research in glaciology, astrophysics, climate science, and marine biology running safely.
